  • Project: Word Clouds in the Wild
  • A research project that bridges computer science, digital humanities, and perceptual
  • psychology, and studies biases to help people design and build word clouds that are less likely to be misinterpreted. Working on documenting how word clouds are currently being used in the wild and using qualitative research methods to build a taxonomy of the similarities and differences within these word clouds across different domains. This taxonomy will uncover where word clouds are being used responsibly (or not) and will help us determine which potential sources of bias are worth investigating empirically. Scripting APIs in Python for popular online newspapers to see what they reveal about infographics and clouds. Eventually the project will focus on determining how to construct word cloud generators that get rid of these biases. Published a scientific paper for the Human Computer Interaction Conference in 2020 based on the research done during the summer.
