Documentation is an engineering problem. Most people treat it like a writing problem — and that's why it breaks at scale. I came to technical writing after 14 years building software. I didn't leave engineering — I brought it with me. The way I think about documentation architecture, automation pipelines, and content systems is the same way I thought about building scalable software. Structure first. Systems second. Words last. But the real shift happening right now isn't about writing better docs. It's about building documentation that AI can reason over. Most documentation today is built for humans skimming a page. That's already not enough. The next layer of users — LLMs, RAG pipelines, AI agents — need content that's structured differently. Chunked intentionally. Typed correctly. Retrievable. That's not a content problem. That's an architecture problem. That's where I'm operating right now. Designing documentation systems that serve both the human reading a guide at 11pm and the AI synthesising an answer at scale. Building Claude skills that give AI genuine domain knowledge. Creating content frameworks that aren't borrowed from a methodology — they're designed for the platform, the users, and the machines that will consume them. The profession is at an inflection point.
