I consider myself a stubborn generalist with a resistance to specialise. I have worked at the intersections of healthcare and health systems with ecological and social systems with a particular focus on health inequities and social determinants of health. I co-lead the Center for Health Systems at the Institute of Public Health, Bengaluru & am also associted with the Center of Adivasi Health as well. My work critically examines the apparently transformative dimensions of techno-managerial solutions to health inequities vis-a-vis addressing fundamental issues of social inequality, exclusion and governance. I have championed open knowledge and contribute actively to English Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, Internet Archive and various other open knowledge and open data projects. From 2014-2023, I lived and worked at the IPH Bengaluru public health research field station in BRT Tiger Reserve in southern India. I have also set up other field stations in forested locations in Kerala and Arunachal Pradesh through collaborations with ecologists/researchers. I served as the Chair of Emerging Voices for Global Health (2015-2019) and am a member of the General Council of the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp (Belgium). Through a fellowship from the DBT/Wellcome Trust India Alliance, I have set up collaborations to examine health inequities in indigenous communities in multiple remote forested locations in southern, central and northeast India. I use health policy and systems research methods particularly realist evaluation, implementation research and participatory action research approaches in addition to experience with quantitative epidemiological methods. I am also a member of research consortia on health systems strengthening for OneHealth and mental health in primary health care. I supervise PhD students pursuing doctoral degree in public health, teach health policy & systems research at Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp & am supporting the WHO Alliance for Health Policy & Systems Research (Geneva) in an HPSR project on digital health interventions.
