Rob Conklin — Recruiter
It’s all about the story. When I went back to college after dropping out, I didn’t think I’d get a degree. I was the first person in my family to attend; I was working full time delivering milk and my days started at 4am (!!) I'm still not a morning person. Ultimately, going back, I rediscovered a love for the stories and narratives that have become a part of my own experience. In particular, I had been trying to read James Joyce’s Ulysses on my own, w/o ever taking a college level course in literature, and I refused to give up. This started an Odyssey all my own. When it came time to find an internship, I was lucky enough to get to work at Schoology. This was my first foray into startup life, and I loved the vibe. The work of being a Proposal Writer, not so much. I felt a need to have more interpersonal interactions on a day-to-day basis. I wanted to hear the stories of the people around me. I wanted to meet and learn from new people every day. After a couple false starts, I landed at Jane.hr, supporting other startups with their hiring processes; I’ve been told that my cover letter was the reason I was interviewed. That letter detailed some of the horrible experiences I had in the application and interview process and how I’d like to create a more warm, welcoming, and empathetic experience for all of the candidates I’d have a chance to meet. It was true, and I did. After getting my feet wet in recruiting, I made the move to Seer, where I learned the foundation of internal recruiting. I’d see the people I hired on the daily. I’d sit with them at lunch and meet with them in conference rooms; it changed how I looked at the process. I also met incredibly kind and thoughtful people, some of whom are my mentors to this day. Joining the team at dbt Labs, I returned to my startup roots. Working through one of the most difficult hiring markets in decades has given me ample opportunities to tap into the resiliency that got me back to school and ultimately writing my Master’s Thesis on Ulysses. When I set my mind to something, I will achieve it. I love to hear the stories of the folks I have the pleasure of meeting every day, whether about work projects, personal experiences, or life goals. I’m always grateful for the time that people are willing to spend telling me about themselves. I learn something new on every call and I get to meet people all over the globe. It’s a total win/win. I’m still improving on a warm, welcoming, and empathetic interview style; and it’s still all about the story. I hope I have the chance to hear yours some time.
