About

For over 20 years, I’ve worked across global food retail to help make stores better, for customers, for colleagues, and for the leadership teams driving change. I’m the founder of Grocery Insight, a consultancy built on truth telling. We walk the aisles, see what customers see, and report what others can’t or won’t say. We’ve advised CEOs and COOs at M&S, Co-Op, Morrisons, Waitrose, Woolworths Australia, Co-Op Denmark (and many, many more) helping leadership teams bridge the gap between strategy and what’s actually happening on the shop floor. Along the way, something happened. Over 15 years of weekly store visits, our team captured more than 1.2 million expert retail images, structured, folder tagged, and spanning the UK, US, Ireland, Netherlands, and Germany. Every seasonal event, every planogram change, every format evolution from 2009 to today. This includes periods nobody else documented at shelf level: Brexit, COVID, and the cost of living crisis (both of those!) That archive is now Kanops. A structured retail image dataset built for AI and computer vision. Entirely by accident. We train our own models, shipper detection, product classification across 20+ categories, seasonal event recognition across 57 events and we license the dataset to AI/ML teams, FMCG brands, retailers and retail analytics providers too. We’re working with King’s College London on research validation, and building Delphi, which is a proprietary AI platform that turns 17 years of competitive retail imagery into actionable trade intelligence for everyone. What makes this different is provenance. These aren’t scraped web images or synthetic data. Every image was captured by retail professionals who understand what they’re photographing and why it matters. No one else has this temporal depth, or expertise in one place. I still walk stores. I still advise retailers. But I’m now building something that outlasts any single consulting engagement. • Kanops is a structured retail image dataset built from 15 years of expert store visits.
  • 1.2 million+ images. Expert-captured, not scraped. Folder-tagged by retailer, format, date, and category. Spanning the UK, US, Ireland, Netherlands, and Germany from 2009 to present.
  • We build and train computer vision models on this data:
  • Shipper detection (YOLO, 99.5% accuracy)
  • Product classification across 21 retail categories
  • Seasonal event recognition across 57 events and 17 years
  • Delphi. Our AI-powered trade intelligence platform turns this archive into actionable seasonal, pricing, and competitive insight. It's trained on my expertise, reports, and two decades of retail knowledge too.
  • Academic partners: King’s College London.
  • No one else has this temporal depth. The dataset spans Brexit, COVID, cost of living, and 15 years of format evolution, all observed at shelf level, every week.
