Gem

Software Engineer

Mar 2022Aug 2023 · 1 yr 5 mos · San Francisco, California, United States · On-site

  • Full-stack software engineer. Gravitated toward mostly backend and architectural work, where I'd have the greatest impact for the team.
  • Led development of Application Review, where recruiters can sift through inbound applications quickly from within Gem's app. That required fleshing out a complex UI on top of a two-way realtime integration between Gem and customer Applicant Tracking Systems (ATSs).
  • Led development of a two-way realtime integration between Gem and Workday ATS in support of Application Review. Workday's ATS isn't designed to be integrated with in such a deep way, so we had to get creative with a mix of webhooks, polling, and periodic data refreshing.

Segment

Software Engineer

Sep 2017Mar 2022 · 4 yrs 6 mos · San Francisco, California, United States · On-site

  • Full-stack software engineer. Leaned toward working on shoring up solid foundations for emerging needs at Segment. Segment was acquired by Twilio in Nov 2020.
  • Took on a generalist role in developing Twilio Engage (fka Segment Journeys), a flagship product, from idea to public beta in 7 months, and GA a few months later. Engage is at the heart of Twilio's overall business strategy today.
  • Led migration of the identity resolution database within Segment Personas (>70TB, >500k RPS) from FoundationDB to DynamoDB. We went from running the largest FDB cluster in the world to a merely top-15 DynamoDB instance.
  • Led revamp of single-sign-on, permissioning, audit logging, and in-app organization systems. Mostly in service of winning and supporting bigger-than-ever enterprise customers. Worked with all of R&D to help them adapt to new org-wide software patterns these features required.
