About

Shri Tejasvi Surya is the Member of Parliament from Bengaluru South constituency, having been elected to the 17th Lok Sabha at the age of just 28. Tejasvi has determinedly taken up the Urban Mobility Crisis in Bengaluru and poor performance of Bengaluru South in Education as the major issues that he intends to tackle as MP. He has conducted several discussions with scientists, form IISc and stakeholders, including startups, to find a solution to Bengaluru's infamous traffic. Tejasvi has stated that Bengaluru needs a multi-modal public transport system with infrastructure that also supports walking and cycling. With regards to education, realizing that Bengaluru South has the most number of students who secured single digit marks in the SSLC examinations, Tejasvi has started a noble 'Each One, Teach One' project which will map mentors with needy students. Surya has been a vocal supporter for an exclusive legislation for his city Bengaluru. He has expressed concern over the existing one-year term for the Mayor and has suggested that the Mayor's tenure should be at least 3-5 years. He urged the Chief Minister of Karnataka to draft and pass an exclusive legislation for Bengaluru - Nava Bengaluru Act, one that would replace the 'archaic and obselete' Karnataka Municipalities Act, 1975. As a parliamentarian, Tejasvi has taken up issues of regional and national importance. In his first ever issue raised in Parliament, Tejasvi batted for more jobs for locals, especially kannadigas, in Regional Rural Banks, pointing out the inefficiency of services in such banks due to the recruitment of candidates without knowledge of the local language. During the Zero Hour in Parliament, he requested Home Minister Amit Shah to extend NRC to Karnataka, citing the influx of illegal immigrants in the state. Karnataka's home minister is already making efforts to introduce the NRC in the state. Tejasvi also urged the government to provide better security measures in the country's sacred monuments in the wake of the vandalism of a holy site in Hampi. He has also participated in Lok Sabha debates, speaking on the Dam Safety Bill in his first ever Parliament session. He has additionally raised important questions as a Member, pushing for the ban on Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems, better known as e cigarettes, and various other issues.
