About

I am a Ph.D. student advised by Dr. Douglas Bowman in the 3D User Interaction group. My broader research interests lie at the intersection of augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), human-computer interaction (HCI), user experience (UX), and machine learning (ML). In particular, my dissertation research centers on designing, developing, and enabling contextually aware user interfaces for everyday mixed-reality experiences. Through the invention of novel interaction techniques that adapt to the user’s comprehensive context—including their tasks, environment, and personal profile—my work aims to enhance future AR/VR technologies with intelligent, user-focused adaptations that improve overall experience or as Meta phrased it "to afford nigh-frictionless interaction."

  • As for now, you should think smart notification system for VR systems that dynamically adjust based on user context! This is with the hope of one day applying said work to everyday AR applications in the future.
  • Research questions: How do we best offer a notification to a user in a VR/AR setting? How do notification (dynamic vs static) placement strategies affect the competing factors of notification understandability and primary task impedance in VR?
  • Research project roles: Idea generator, lead developer, user study designer, and design guinea pig.

  • Rapidly developed a machine learning pipeline that could detect sensitive information and remove privacy identifiers in real-time, which had led to multiple initiatives worthy of patents and a technical white paper accepted into the 2019 Strata Data Conference where we presented our preliminary findings on real-time privacy detection and anonymization techniques.
  • Potential impact: This work would allow Intel to make millions by selling training data as a product while not being privy to large fines caused by breaches of data privacy laws worldwide.
