  • Appstore –
  • Post the above stints, I wanted to move to a team that had impact across all devices and I felt Appstore provided the opportunity. The initial focus in Appstore was on the client side – purchase, download and install of applications on Fire Tablets and Fire TV. This is the vicinity where users get app updates, interact using voice and promote app content. The team also built few exemplary features to increase the PDI adoption and usage and decrease the load in operations. I further extended by scope by taking the ownership of developer experience, the team drives efforts to maintain developer engagement by contributing efforts where 3P developers engage with Appstore by submitting their apps to enter the Amazon Appstore network. My current focus is on empowering and educating customers on 3P content for TV and Tablets. As it is widely known, 3P content drives maximum adoption in the device space and my current focus is revolved around how to empower customers on the visibility of 3P content. This includes major players like Netflix, YouTube, BBC and Disney+ among other partners where my team has taken the ownership towards contributing unitedly on increased usage and adoption.

  • Alexa Communications –
  • This was period when Alexa usage was gaining visibility and adoption with customers. One of the top 3 use cases for Alexa was to view how consumers can utilize Alexa as a medium for communication, hence Amazon introduced Alexa communications (comms) to ease the communication gaps. The mission of the Alexa Comms organization is to help bring customers closer together. Aided by the world’s most intelligent personal assistant, we help them connect with family, friends, colleagues, and services.I was the first member in Chennai to gear up and formulate an org of 300 employees marching on Alexa communications. Today Alexa comms is one among the top 5 domains that plays a major role in adoption. My team played a critical role on delivering the Alexa communication experience.

  • Kindle Device software –
  • As part of Kindle device software, I helped transition Software framework and application stack to Chennai. The team delivered kindle device software launches for e-readers to customers. In 2011, our focus expanded to Fire Tablets and Fire TV apart from our initial drive for e-readers. The team which I started focused on android which included system apps that shipped with the OS and gained 3 years of experience in the field. Fire OS was primitive since it served across all the android based devices which powered Fire TV, tablets and fire phone.

  • Kindle content –
  • During this period, the adoption for kindle devices among customers were increasing. The device by itself will not make sense unless serves with content. I received the opportunity to leverage this new space and managed content for e-periodicals, kindle books and transitioned multiple teams from US and other global locations to focus primarily on converting books into kindle format. The various challenges my team solved included book formatting, publishing and pricing. The team soon grew from single digits to triple numbers due to expansion in technology, operations and the successful launch of kindle devices. Amazon is a fast paced company nonetheless, but the rapid pace at which the Chennai office was operating to meet the needs and deliver in time considering the vast inflow of multiple kindle launches in a year, which first started of at 1 device a year put this as a breakthrough in my experience that also led to be a critical factor to generate revenue for the kindle business even today.

  • Digital services infrastructure -
  • With the years of experience I had gained in Microsoft, Amazon was the next big venture to support my thirst in technology. Just then Amazon was expanding into music, videos and e-books among the other sizeable ventures. In the spring of time I entered the workforce and joined the digital content team. My first project at Amazon involved on how to get content from content providers and store it in an efficient and secure fashion considering the high volumes (HD content among a few). The challenges to be solved involved around how we could store 10 or 40 gig files securely preventing data leak. Received 2 patents as part of this project. Till this date the structure that was formed in the earlier days is still being consumed, maintained and widely consumed in the digital content space served by Amazon.

  • SQL compact database –
  • Post the above two endeavors, wanted to look next at building a database called the SQL compact database. The project drew its inspiration from a need. Teams had a requirement to store the data in a structured format so it’s easy and efficient to query and retrieve data. For instance, in windows mobile, your contacts are stored in a database so users can query the contacts for faster results. Similarly, the crux of the project was customer centric to bridge the gaps and meet the requirements to make it user friendly. Since it was a light weight database, it got shipped with windows media player. The product further got shipped in windows, windows mobile and SQL server.

  • Backup solutions for windows server –
  • I was looking to gain experience in server technologies since tech based backup started picking momentum. Hence initiated work on a project that involved building of disc based backup. This was yet another noteworthy initiative brought into the R&D center in Hyderabad. My work revolved around UI, setup and algorithms to ensure usability for administrators. The intention was to simplify using algorithms to showcase the right set of errors while doing backup and restore that addresses the core need to recover when an issue tappers down the system. This was later shipped as part of the windows server. As part of this project, I scored 2 patents that assisted me the driving edge to work on more such interesting projects.

  • Building outlook as a client for domino server –
  • I was part of the R&D Microsoft center in Hyderabad. I had just then graduated fresh out of college trying to figure out how the industry functions and set up enterprise solutions as an offering. I was one of the first people to get recruited from campus in the Hyderabad center, 2nd member in a team of 15 employees. We had 4 projects being perused from the center, among this I worked on a project that involved building outlook as a client for Domino server. IBM Domino server has an email offering to view emails. To view emails, the user has to use lotus client in order to view the emails from Domino. At that period in time, Microsoft office was big and widely used, just about anybody in the corporate industry had Microsoft Office installed in their machines which also included outlook to access emails. The project was even demoed to IBM on how we built a connector for bridging Microsoft outlook as an email client for Domino. It was well accepted and this established a good entry point for MS Office. This initiative helped me strengthen my base on applications.
