About

I am an accomplished entrepreneur and technologist. I have extensive experience in distributed systems, serverless computing and cloud, programming languages, compilers and developer tools. I founded Nimbella, a serverless cloud company that was successfully acquired by DigitalOcean. There I led the launch of Functions and created a roadmap that differentiated the serverless product catalog. I was the main creator and developer behind Apache OpenWhisk, the premier open-source platform for serverless computing. I created OpenWhisk while at IBM Research, where I also led the development and operations of IBM Cloud Functions. I am passionate about delivering exceptional developer experiences, enabling new classes of applications to take advantage of serverless computing, and pushing the boundaries of cloud technologies.

  • I joined DigitalOcean through the Nimbella aquisition, and I continued to work with the company until April 2023. During this time, I spearheaded the launch of DigitalOcean Functions, both as a new standalone serverless offering and as an integrated capability with DigitalOcean's App Platform. The successful launch of Functions marked an effective collaboration between our two companies. I developed DigitalOcean's serverless portfolio and product strategy, and executed a roadmap to further differentiate DigitalOcean's serverless and PaaS products in the marketplace.

  • I founded a serverless cloud company called Nimbella, with a strong focus on providing an exceptional developer experience and vertical integration of foundational cloud capabilities. Our platform enabled developers to quickly develop and deploy full-stack and Jamstack applications, and it was available on Google Cloud and AWS as a SaaS for self-serve developers. The Nimbella platform integrated numerous cloud-native services, including load balancing, networking, certificate management, object storage, key-value storage, and fully managed, secure, and scalable computing. Additionally, we licensed the Nimbella platform on premise and in-VPC on both clouds for bespoke deployments.
  • I led an exceptional team of engineers, developer advocates, marketers, and salespeople, all of whom worked to bring our technology to developers and businesses. I successfully handled industry analyst briefings, customer outreach, and developer outreach, which helped raise Nimbella's profile in the market. As a result of our efforts, Nimbella was highlighted in several cloud briefings and won industry awards.
  • In September 2021, Nimbella was acquired by DigitalOcean, and I continued to work with the company until April 2023. During this time, I spearheaded the launch of DigitalOcean Functions, both as a new standalone serverless offering and as an integrated capability with DigitalOcean's App Platform. • I am one of the creators and the lead technical contributor to Apache OpenWhisk, an event based computing model for the serverless cloud. I co-founded this effort at IBM Research in early 2015, and continue to lead the design and implementation of the core architecture, tooling and runtimes. OpenWhisk is the premiere open source platform for research and innovation for serverless computing with Functions-as-a-Service. It is production-ready and available as a service via IBM Cloud Functions and Adobe as I/O runtime. It is also integrated with Red Hat's OpenShift and deployed on-prem in several organization worldwide. I subsequently lead a broad research agenda around programming models and tooling for serverless computing to enable many classes of applications in IoT, workflow orchestration, chatbots, and HPC to take advantage of the promises offered by serverless computing.
  • Before getting into Cloud, I spent several years leading an effort to design a programming language for hardware synthesis (via FPGAs) and performance acceleration with GPUs. My other contributions at IBM include computing with spreadsheets which shipped in InfoSphere Streams, and the web content management system for all IBM Researchers.
