Jun 2012Dec 2012 · 6 mos · Brooklyn, New York

  • I was at Hacker School, New York for 6 months and it easily was the best decision of my life. Hacker School is a programmer's retreat where programmers from all over the world (about 50 of us) gathered in Brooklyn New York for 3 months or more and hacked together for 8 hours, 4 days a week. I worked on technologies such as Node.js, Ruby, Python. I built a python interpreter based on parser combinators, wrote a css selector engine analogous to jQuery's Sizzle, built a game engine in Ruby, recreated super mario on python and worked on a live help portal on Node.js, to name a few projects.
  • Key take aways from Hacker School was :
  • code reviews by peers were greatly helpful in improving code quality
  • contributing to open source projects such as Flot and OpenHatch
  • understanding git and how to effectively use it
