About

David M. Sluss, PhD is the Leading@Scale Chaired Professor at ESSEC Business School in Paris. His mission is to help leaders scale what matters: the capability to inspire real future-ready collaboration and change in organizations. David didn’t take the “straight line” route to academia. After a test told him he “wasn’t smart enough” for the academic path he originally wanted, he did what he’s done ever since: adapted, found another route to his goal, and kept going – creating a rich background to draw upon when helping leaders scale. From soloing an aircraft at 16, to launching his own independent singer-songwriter label at 19, to becoming fluent in Spanish while serving the Latino community as a missionary at 21, he learned early that leadership isn’t about rank. It’s about building resilience in yourself and cultivating it in others so collaboration and growth can actually happen. After finding his way through a Master’s degree and before becoming a professor, David built his leadership chops as a leadership development consultant, joining a growing firm early, wearing every hat imaginable, and becoming a partner before 30. That blend, deep academic research plus lived leadership experience, is now the heartbeat of his work: evidence you can trust, delivered in a way leaders can actually use on ‘Monday morning.’ Over the last two decades as a scholar and an executive educator, David has taught and advised leaders across industries and borders, including extensive executive education across Europe, North America, Latin America, Middle East, Africa and Asia. Today, he brings that global lens to one central question: how do people and teams scale commitment, collaboration, and performance when the pace won’t slow down? David’s work has appeared in top academic journals. He also publishes in managerial-focused outlets such as Harvard Business Review, MIT Sloan Management Review, and Fast Company. He speaks to leaders and organizations frequently on ‘Future-Ready Leadership’, ‘Proactive Patience as a Leadership Superpower’, and ‘Leading Change That Scales.’
