University of washington

Adjunct Instructor in Department of Communications Commlead Program

Apr 2011Jun 2015 · 4 yrs 2 mos · Greater Seattle Area

  • I worked with communications grad students on their Independent Studies (IS), which are typically capstone projects before graduation.
  • We covered two main areas: Transmedia Storytelling + Storytelling for the Internet of Things. Both areas of research focused on the creative and operational challenges of building sustainable media organizations in shifting environments where every "thing" --- not just every screen --- is capable of digital interaction with a person.
  • TRANSMEDIA STORYTELLING: I managed several very small teams of 1-3 students who developed original content around the opportunities and challenges of simultaneous multi-platform storytelling. In June 2013, my students were recognized by the Department of Communication as having produced the top rated graduate level research project for all 2012 with "The Transmedia Marketing Playbook".
  • INTERNET OF THINGS (IoT): In 2014 at the University of Washington, a colleague and I worked with eight graduate students in the Dept. of Communication to prototype a social layer to sit on top of a healthcare wearable device. The audience scenario consisted of an elderly patient (aged 75+) who wore the physical device, an adult child caregiver (aged 45+), and medical professionals. The research question pivoted around the possible “connections” where shared data communicated different meanings to the three audiences. What information in what format do these different audiences need to collaborate toward the better health and wellness of a person? How do we develop different user experiences for different audiences who have different needs, but who are socially connected, and who draw from the same data lake? The students presented their analysis to communication department leadership as well as to one of Seattle's top digital design and user experience agencies.
