• The prevalent methods of drinking water disinfection have harmful side effects and are reported to cause cancer and other deadly diseases. Moreover, these modern disinfection methods are not available for the people living in rural India. So, an effort was made to establish the use of Iron in elemental form (Zero Valent Iron) as a disinfectant. The Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) generated during oxidation of Iron from elemental form to Ferrous and to Ferric State were used to kill the microorganisms (E.coli) in water.
• Learning: Use of Iron as a disinfectant could be a cheap solution to many water borne diseases in the rural areas where surface water/groundwater was often contaminated with sewage.
