About

Creating things from scratch gives me great joy. From an early age, I knew that I was meant to be an entrepreneur. I discovered my love for stock markets at age 16 when accidentally stumbling upon it on television and I've never looked back. Over the last 15+ years, I've been actively involved in the Indian capital markets as a trader, a stockbroker, and a problem solver for over a million traders and investors at FYERS. Besides that, we also provide brokerage services to institutional investors such as Mutual Fund AMCs, Banks, Insurance companies, Portfolio Management Services (PMS), Alternative Investment Funds (Category III) and Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs). Apart from catering to asset management firms, we started with our own journey with Asset Management recently (FYERS Asset Management). The goal is create wealth for high-conviction and mature investors with a long-term mindset. Overall, bootstrapping FYERS into a profitable & fast-growing startup with 1 million+ happy clients from across the country has been fun & challenging. With each new development, it feels like the journey has just begun!

Proprietary Trader

  • Proprietary trading on ICE and NYMEX. The focus was on making money by trading outrights and spreads of US Energy markets on a daily and positional basis. The days were long since it included tracking the price movements and fundamentals of several energy markets; Crude Oil, Natural Gas & Gas Oil during the European and American trading hours.
  • Apart from trading, my primary functions included:
  • Tracking EIA (US Energy Information Administration) production and inventory/storage data.
  • Tracking the prices and developments of other competing fuel resources.
  • Forecasting Weather conditions in US as the variations determine seasonal price changes.
  • Tracking economic factors to forecast the price of Crude Oil.
  • Keeping tab on geopolitical developments which have an important bearing on oil prices.
  • Tracking money-flows by closely observing the major equity indices, commodities and fixed income instruments around the world. (Example: S&P 500, NASDAQ, Nikkei 225, Shanghai Composite, CAC 40, FTSE 100, Precious Metals and Benchmark bonds of US & Europe.

Zerodha

Dealing and Customer Support

Aug 2011Nov 2011 · 3 mos · Bangalore

  • I joined Zerodha in the wee hours of the startup mania. It was a fun place to be at maybe because it felt like I was finally at the center of the periphery. However, I played a relatively insignificant role of dealing and customer support. I say insignificant because the the senior dealers were more equipped in experience than me in executing orders at record speed. The dealing room was always buzzing with phone-calls from small traders demanding to buy OTM options, especially on expiry days.
  • My takeaways from here:
  • How to bet against pissed off people.
  • How to do a googly on the TT table.
  • How to raise stakes in a poker game & make small guys fold.
  • How to punch buy/sell orders like a pro.
  • How to manage risks of the trading system.
  • How to drive more effectively in the peak hours of traffic.

Freelance investment advisor

Portfolio Manager and Equity Trader

Feb 2010Feb 2012 · 2 yrs · Bengaluru Area, India

  • When I accidentally stumbled upon the ticker tape on a financial news channel at age 16, I was hooked, I decided to seriously pursue the stock markets although I never had any background or backing to help me through it. I just loved analyzing the demand-supply of everything including relationships so I took the plunge and I had nothing to lose.
  • With lack of experience and resources to learn real fundamentals of equity markets, I took a keen interest in analyzing everything TOP-DOWN. My conviction in tracking money-flows increased when short-term technical-analysis failed to deliver the silver bullet.
  • Without having a second chance to make the first impression to my initial clients, I took up their portfolio management requirements seriously. I actively traded/advised them successfully.
  • As usual, gung-ho investors expected wonders overnight. The portfolio strategy was to stay narrow and invest in companies which can double as the relief rally post the 2008 crisis had sent stocks soaring. Basically, there was no use of leverage and it helped. As it turned out, markets rallied and the investors did well.
