About

Varun is a social entrepreneur and mechanical engineer who has made it his mission to eliminate waste and enable independence for small farmers. ‘The uncomfortable truth, is that those who feed our global populations, are themselves sleeping hungry at night’ Varun founded Raheja Solar Food Processing with his mother Babita Raheja to address this inequality. After engineering a new, affordable solar dryer, and distributing thousands of them across rural India, Raheja Solar Food Processing is now the leading provider of this technology countrywide. The company also trains farmers to use the equipment (designed to dry excess fruit at the highest quality) then buys back the produce at the highest market price. A multiple award winner, Varun is listed as Forbes 30U30 Asia (Manufacturing), recipient of the Dr. Shirin Gadhia Sustainability Award, featured among Indian Achievers 40U40 club and recognised by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) as a driving force for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Varun’s latest waste-solving venture targets the fashion industry using sustainable fabric will be launching in soon.

  • If food waste were a country, it would be the third highest emitter of greenhouse gases after the US and China. That’s not to mention the crisis of inequality in this particular supply chain.
  • Raheja Solar Food Processing distributes affordable and portable solar dehydrators to farmers across India, providing low-income farmers with an additional revenue stream whilst reducing food waste. Our solar dehydrator dehydrates the produce at farm level increasing its shelf life without sugar or preservative, while retaining the natural colour, taste, fragrance and nutrients.
  • The market for healthy, ready-to-eat snacks is growing exponentially and we are on a mission to push small farmers to play a major role in the shift. Over the last 5 years we’ve empowered 50000+ farmers in India, distributing 3500+ solar dehydrators and facilitating 200+ sensible B2C partner connections who are buying the dried products as ingredients that were supposed to be thrown away if not processed. Our smart and scalable model will support millions of farmers across the world over the next decade and provide the farm fresh dried ingredients to brands.

She was the Director of the Barli Development Institute for Rural Women Indore from 1985 to 2011, which trained more than 6000 tribal girls and young women from 500 villages of India in solar cooking, food processing, and installed 500 SK 14 solar cookers in Indian villages.
  • During my research, I came across learning about solar cooking, waste to wealth application and natural farming. Moreover, most importantly about solar drying, which blown my mind about how a simple and efficient solar application has potential to change the world. The center's solar dryer was developed by Late OBE Jimmy McGilligan.
