University of maryland

Research Associate

Mar 1995Jan 1998 · 2 yrs 10 mos

  • Research into runtime-optimization of distributed systems. Two examples :
  • 1. Deferred dataflow analysis - authored an oft-cited paper about a novel compiler optimization technique that used runtime information (e.g. the input data set) to optimize a program while it was running. This was very effective for optimizing long-running applications (eg. scene rendering, chip layout, airflow analysis etc) where the more impactful code-optimization opportunities depend on the input dataset, and hence compiler optimizations have to be "deferred" to run-time.
  • 2. Usenix paper on - network-aware mobile programs. Here "mobile" refers to a program than can move across machines (not a program than runs on mobile devices). This paper described how a process can hop machines while running (by snapshotting its runtime state and sending that AND its code to a different server where it reincarnates) so it can run closer to the data it needs. This proved very useful for "big data" applications where there are large hetrogenous data-sets at different locations (astronomy, weather, healthcare etc.)
