Most product leaders are either technical or commercial. I've spent 13 years being both. I've built platforms from the database up: algorithms, APIs, systems serving 70,000+ businesses. I've also sat in boardrooms, presented to CEOs and corporate procurement teams, and translated what the engineering team was actually trying to say into decisions that moved organisations forward. That gap between what your tech team knows and what your business needs to hear is where most startups quietly lose months. I live in that gap. It's what I'm most often told I do well and it's the reason I work fractionally rather than picking a side. What this looks like in practice: - Walking out of your leadership meeting and straight into sprint planning, credible in both rooms. - Helping your CTO explain why something takes three months without losing the CEO - Making the build vs buy call with real analysis, not instinct or politics - Identifying what's actually blocking progress - it's rarely what the team thinks it is Over 13 years: enterprise delivery at Infosys and TCS, platform leadership at MSDUK, and co-founding three companies, including one I closed after deciding the market timing was wrong. That last decision is probably the most useful thing I know how to do. Right now I'm also building two products of my own, bootstrapped, alongside my fractional work. I do this because staying close to the reality of building makes me a sharper advisor. I work with early-stage founders, Series A+ teams, and corporate innovation leads — UK and global clients, from India. I travel to the UK for key engagements.
