  • I started an online laundry platform called Iron-E in Mumbai, aimed at providing affordable laundry services. Our approach included several unique features:
  • Personalized QR Codes: We created QR codes for each household, which included their address. This meant customers didn't have to enter their details every time they ordered. They just scanned the code on their door, making the process quick and easy.
  • Web-Based Platform: Our service was entirely web-based, so customers didn't need to download an app, adding to their convenience.
  • Cost-Effective Delivery: To keep delivery costs low, we used a route planning system. Instead of picking up orders one by one, we scheduled pickups within specific time slots (e.g., 11 AM to 12 PM). This allowed our delivery person to collect multiple orders in one trip, reducing the cost per delivery.
  • Research and development phase included:
  • Detailed Operational Planning: We meticulously planned our staff's day. For example, our laundry workers would spend the first hour testing clothes for color fastness, the next hour starting the wash, and ironing clothes while the washing was in progress.
  • Customer Analysis: We looked at different customer types, such as rich bachelors versus poor bachelors, and boys versus girls, to understand who would give more or different kinds of clothes. This helped us tailor our services to meet varying needs.
  • Machine Capacity Study: We analyzed how much different types of clothes weighed (e.g., jeans versus shirts) to predict our washing machine usage, revenue, and costs.
  • Feasibility Study: After 3-4 months of hard work and research, we realized that due to high real estate rents and other factors, the business wouldn't be sustainable in the long run. Therefore, we decided not to move forward with the implementation.
