About

I've built two companies, shut both down, and now invest in founders who are braver than I was. I'm the founder of TDV Partners, a pre-seed and seed stage venture fund betting on India's consumer revolution. We've backed 40+ startups across consumer tech, consumer AI, fintech, spiritual tech, and the creator economy. My investing lens was shaped by three chapters: Chapter 1 | Founder: I started FruitOn (cold-pressed juice delivery) at IIM Ahmedabad and Athletto (a sports venue marketplace that partnered with Decathlon, won a FICCI award, and was shortlisted for YC). Both taught me what it feels like to build from zero and what it feels like when things don't work out. Chapter 2 | Venture investor at InnoVen Capital (Temasek-backed): I managed portfolio companies like Swiggy, Eruditus, Licious, and Blackbuck watching some of them grow from early traction to unicorn status and public listing. That front-row seat to 0 ->1->1000 is what I bring to every founder conversation today. Chapter 3 | Fund manager at TDV: Now I'm a founder on the other side of the table, writing early checks into founders building for India's next consumer wave. I look for repeat founders or deep domain experts building high-tech, low-ops businesses like marketplaces, platforms, and exchanges that can scale with digital distribution. Or founders building for top 100M Indians across consumer brand, services or lifestyle or consumer upgrade as I often refer to it. I am open to interesting themes in consumer AI as well. I believe India will produce the next set of trillion-dollar companies in the coming decades. TDV exists to find and back those founders from Day 1. Beyond work, I'm a tennis player, a landscape photographer, and a poker enthusiast. I think the best investment decisions, like the best tennis shots, come from staying calm under pressure and trusting your preparation. If you're building something in consumer tech, consumer upgrade or consumer AI across fintech, spiritual tech, gaming, or the creator economy or if you just want to talk about India's startup ecosystem I'd love to hear from you. 📩 ujwal@tdv.partners

  • VC investing in founders with global outlook from Day 1
  • Significant bias for repeat founders or founders with domain expertise
  • Higher preference for high tech, low ops ventures, B2C plays
  • Sector preferences - Fintech, Gaming, SaaS, Social, Media & Entertainment, Creator Economy, Spirituality Tech
  • Mostly invest at pre revenue and pre product stages

  • Managed end-to-end deal flow - sourcing, evaluation, execution, and portfolio management for India's leading venture debt firm (Temasek-backed).
  • My portfolio companies included Swiggy (now listed), Blackbuck (now listed), Eruditus ($3B+ valuation), Licious ($1B+), and Dealshare ($1B+). Collectively, they raised $3B+ and were valued at $9B+
  • The biggest lesson from InnoVen: great companies scale through relentless focus, not just massive funding. Watching founders navigate from Series A to unicorn status taught me how to identify early signals that most investors miss.

Athletto

Founder

Jan 2015 – Jun 2020 · 5 yrs 5 mos · Bengaluru, Karnataka, India

  • Built a marketplace for searching and booking sports venues and fitness centres. Partnered with Decathlon, won a FICCI award, raised an angel round, and was shortlisted for Y Combinator.
  • After 5.5 years, I made the hard decision to shut it down. That experience, the highs of building something from nothing and the lows of letting it go is what makes me a better investor today. I know what founders go through because I've been there.
  • Initiated the concept, formed founding team and built the company from 0 to 1
  • Raised seed round from Angel investors
  • Became a part of CIIE and IIM Ahmedabad's IIMavericks Programme
  • Grew across 8 cities in India for searching and across 4 cities for booking in India.
  • Responsible for various strategic tie-ups with entities like Decathlon, Bengaluru Football Club(BFC), Champions Tennis League, Sports365
  • Overlooked development of 5 tech products from ideation to actual working stable version with inputs from various stakeholders
  • Responsible for budget planning for various activities, pricing, devising engagement schemes for the demand and supply side
  • Launched internationally in Lebanon across 3 cities
