Julian Eggebrecht is Director - Technology Research, Support & Design Group at Netflix & Co-Founder at Factor 5. He was Senior Director - Media Technology & Services, Strategic Partnerships at Epic Games, Vice President, Technology - Device Platforms, Emerging Tech, XR at Hulu, and was CEO and Co-Founder of SmoothVOD, the leading licensor of video-on-demand technologies. SmoothVODs platform has served hundreds of millions of customers since 2009 with partners Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, and Amazon. Following an acquisition by Epic Games the technology now is part of Unreal Engine, powering all media in Fortnite. Julian went to the Filmhochschule in Munich to become a movie director, dropping out to build the video game and technology pioneer Factor 5, founded in Germany in 1987, and subsequently co-founded Factor 5 LLC in California, thanks to a partnership with George Lucas’ LucasArts.As CEO & Creative Director of Factor 5, he was a technology partner in the development of the Nintendo Gamecube & Wii consoles and member of the Sony PlayStation ICE group. With his teams he has pioneered many advances in audio and visuals for games, often in collaboration with partners like Dolby, THX, and AMD/ATI.Julian's work as Director and Producer includes the Turrican line of games, the Star Wars: Rogue Squadron franchise, multiple installments of Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones, games in the Soccer and Contra series from Konami, and the controversial PlayStation original Lair. His most recent work as a director can be found in TouchFish from TouchFactor, an interactive social toybox and virtual creature experience. In the early 1990s, after a brief role as Producer at German publisher Rainbow Arts, he also worked as freelance Author and Critic for widely read German print magazines, notably co-founding M&T’s Video Games, as well as writing editorials and reviews for Total! and Gamers. Julian has served on the board of the IGDA and as its Treasurer, has been an advisory board member of the Game Developers Conference for many years, and has been keynote speaker and given lectures at CES, SXSW, Gamescom & GDC.
