About

I'm Sophie, an independent marketing consultant specialising in charities, social enterprises and other purpose-driven organisations. After 6+ years of Head of Marketing and Communications roles across local, national, and international charities, I've seen pretty much every flavour of marketing challenge the sector can throw at you. Often I work with teams when things feel messy, overwhelming or stuck. Other times my clients are in a good place and want to go further - launching something new, levelling up their marketing, or bringing in extra capacity for a specific project. Either way, I bring the same care and attention to every organisation I work with. I take time to properly understand your situation before anything else, to ensure I'm providing the most tailored and cost-effective support possible. I'm especially experienced with small teams, limited budgets, and stretched capacity, and I know that marketing can easily fall to the bottom of the pile when time is limited. But for purpose-driven organisations it's one of the most powerful tools you have - it's how you reach the people who need you most, build emotional connections with your supporters, raise your profile, and make the case for your work to funders. My services include strategy development, channel planning, campaign development and implementation, coaching, training, fractional leadership, recruitment support, and more. I work with clients on an ongoing basis and on short-term projects - including single-session "marketing clinics" if you just need an expert brain to pick for an hour. I also write On Purpose, a free newsletter for purpose-driven organisations full of the marketing news and insights that are actually relevant to you. You can sign up here: https://www.turnerandbagel.com/newsletter If you work in an organisation doing good things and want some flexible and human senior-level marketing support, I'd love to chat. • I lead IAPWA’s marketing and communications function on a fractional basis, providing senior oversight, structure, and direction. The role focuses on clarity, consistency, and joined-up working, ensuring the charity's marketing supports awareness and fundraising goals across the organisation.
  • I manage and support a small marketing and communications team, lead campaigns, develop brand guidelines and shared resources, and advise colleagues across the organisation on best practice. Head of Campaigns (Fractional)

Mar 2024Jan 2026 · 1 yr 10 mos

  • As Fractional Head of Campaigns at IAPWA, I was responsible for driving engagement and income generation through charity campaigns, with a strong focus on creativity, clarity, and impact. Working within the realities of a modest following and limited budgets, I developed campaign ideas designed to build momentum and encourage supporter action without relying on scale or spend.
  • I led the strategy and delivery of a range of fundraising and engagement campaigns, including the Borneo animal shelter fundraising campaign, Art for Animals, Walk for Paws, and petitions on donkey and pangolin welfare. This involved shaping campaign concepts, messaging, and supporter journeys, coordinating volunteers, and ensuring campaigns were aligned with wider organisational goals. The role combined strategic thinking with hands-on delivery, using inventive approaches to maximise reach, participation, and income.

Strategic Marketing Consultant

Sep 2024Present · 1 yr 8 mos · Nottingham, England, United Kingdom · Remote

  • I work with charities, CICs and purpose-driven organisations to bring focus and momentum to their marketing. With over a decade of experience, my role is often about stepping back, asking the right questions, and helping teams make decisions that feel grounded in their values as well as their goals.
  • My work is human-centred and practical. Sometimes that means building a clear marketing strategy from the ground up. Other times it’s about untangling existing plans, supporting a specific project, helping recruit the right marketing capacity, or acting as a sounding board for teams who need space to think. I’m particularly experienced in working with organisations that have limited time, small teams and tight budgets, and in finding ways to create impact without chasing scale for its own sake.
