About

Kai Zhang received the B.S. degree in computer science from Nankai University China, with the highest GPA in the department. In 2011, he received the Ph.D. degree in computer science from the Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China. From 2011 to 2012, He worked as a researcher in Tencent Inc. Beijing, China, taking the responsibility to optimize the video communication scheme embedded in Wechat (Weixin). From 2012 to 2016, He worked as a technical manager then a team manager in Mediatek Inc. Beijing, China, leading a research team to propose novel technologies to emerging standards such as 3D-HEVC, HEVC-RExt, HEVC-SCC and AVS-2. In 2016, he moved to San Diego, CA, United States as an outstanding researcher (O1 2016, Eb1.b 2017), joining Qualcomm as a staff engineer. In 2018, he joined Bytedance Inc. San Diego, CA. Now he is leading a research team targetting at future video compression technologies beyond VVC in Bytedance. Dr. Zhang’ research interests include video/image coding, processing and communication, especially the video coding standardization. In 2006, he proposed his first proposal JVT-R064 and his first adopted proposal JVT-S051. From then, he has contributed more than 500 proposals to JVT, VCEG, JCT-VC, JCT-3V, AVS team, JPEG-AI, IEEE1857, MPEG-GPCC and JVET, covering many important aspects of standards such as H.264/AVC SVC extension, HEVC, 3D-HEVC, VVC, JPEG-AI and AVS. More than 100 of his proposals have been adopted. He has 700+ U.S. patents applications. Most of these patents are essential to popular video coding standards.
