Confluent

Senior Director

May 2022Mar 2026 · 3 yrs 10 mos · Boston, Massachusetts, United States

  • At Confluent, I created and led a new engineering organization responsible for the end‑to‑end user experience across the company’s products. Over time, the organization’s charter expanded to include of the Governance product and the company’s cloud billing platform.
  • I defined and scaled the organization’s leadership team, growing from a single Director with no senior managers and no Principal+ engineers to an organization with multiple Directors, senior managers, and Principal+ engineers. The leadership team grew through a combination of external recruiting and internal growth while the engineering org grew from ~40 engineers to ~120 engineers.
  • The organization delivered meaningful impact for customers and the business in several key areas:
  • UX: Helped the R&D organization shift from feature-centric delivery to user-journey driven development, introducing data-driven UX decision making and operational rigor to define, measure, and increase reliability while keeping on-call time stable. Initiated a stronger focus on the developer persona through targeted investment and delivery of developer-focused experiences.
  • Governance: Improved reliability and operational maturity to support a 99.95% SLA for one of the company’s four core product areas, as customer growth and adoption increased, while also delivering multiple revenue-impacting features to contribute to the top line.
  • Billing: Migrated from an in-house billing engine to a third-party platform, increasing feature agility while lowering engineering costs and maintaining compliance requirements for Commercial and Government clouds.
  • Cloud Platform: Initiated and incubated foundational cloud platform efforts to deliver reusable, regional cloud services for metadata storage and request routing. These projects established shared cloud‑native primitives used across product areas and were ultimately transitioned to a dedicated platform organization for long‑term ownership and continued investment.

  • In my final role at Microsoft, I led a new Azure initiative from zero to production—building a new multi-discipline team and delivering core networking for new enterprise products and revenue streams. The Azure Specialized organization enabled major enterprise products such as VMware and large-scale SAP deployments to run as fully managed services on Azure infrastructure and platforms. I was accountable for delivering and operating the networking stacks that enabled customers to move complex and traditionally self-hosted workloads into Azure seamlessly.
  • I scaled a multi-discipline organization from ~15 to ~100 engineers (networking, software, and data), while partnering closely with the core Azure Networking organization to maximize reuse of existing platforms and infrastructure. This role combined hyperscale infrastructure leadership, deep networking expertise, and close partnership with both internal Azure teams and strategic external partners.
  • Examples of delivered impact include
  • Delivering a new Azure hardware SKU hosting an innovative network appliance that acted as a common “socket” for enterprise products to connect to the core Azure network;
  • Leading network design, implementation, and operations for large revenue-generating products in Azure that included SAP on bare metal servers (a first for Azure), VMWare, and NetApp;
  • Leading design and delivery of the networking capabilities for the first supercomputer in Azure, custom built for OpenAI.

  • In this role at Microsoft, I led the engineering of a new Azure service, Azure Frontdoor, after growing it from an internal v1 service to a v2 version for use by external customers. Initially, I stabilized the engineering team, giving them space and time to develop end-to-end ownership of the v1 service. Next, I grew the team and their level of experience, while shifting the initial design for the v2 to prioritize performance, scale, and multi tenancy to support more large internal Microsoft properties, including Microsoft Office and Windows Update. During this time, I focused on the core serving stack of the service, while also partnering with senior leaders in other divisions at Microsoft to architect and deliver multi-tenancy and support for stateful services such as Office.
  • Following the organization’s transition from Bing to Azure, I assumed accountability for all engineering aspects of the service and partnered with Product to monetize and launch the platform for Azure customers. The launch provided Azure customers with the same performance and reliability improvements we had delivered for Bing and Office.
  • Examples of delivered impact include:
  • Providing significant performance and reliability improvements for users on Bing, Office, and other Microsoft web applications;
  • Scaling the technology and team to go from supporting a single large-scale stateless internal service (Bing) to multiple large scale stateful and stateless services, both internal and external;
  • Leading key architectural, implementation, and integration decisions across the serving stack with key partners and stakeholders;
  • Driving operational maturity, improving reliability and security through process, culture, and technical investments.
