About

I am a technology professional with over 20 years of experience, including more than 5 years in executive management roles around software services and products. I have worked in the Oil & Gas, Defense, Telecom, and Real Estate sectors. I built venture backed agri startup and now I head engineering at 10Pearls Pakistan - a top IT exporter. I am a Board Member of TiE Islamabad. I also sat on the boards of Step Robotics, AHKRC, and OPEN Islamabad. I was part of the founding oversight committees for the National Incubation Centers in Peshawar and Karachi. Before COVID, I actively participated in National and Punjab IT policies, contributing to the inclusion of the digital-first policy for future government services. I am a former President of Code for Pakistan, a largely volunteer-run organization. Our most impactful contribution during my tenure was our work with the Pakistan Citizen Portal for a nationwide launch. We also built a few initiatives with development sector partners, including a web tool to monitor the performance of legislators and a pilot solution to protect journalists under threat. Additionally, we worked on a tech solution to discourage online harassment of marginalized communities. Over the years, we organized then Pakistan's largest hackathons and actively worked with civil society organizations to facilitate government engagement around the Open Government Partnership, with my focus on the use of digital. Currently on hold, I also co-founded a civic startup, ittila.com, which aims to make citizens more informed. The long-term goal was to transform how the government communicates with citizens, believing that information equalization would positively impact democracy in Pakistan. Industry-academia linkage, and more specifically access to talent, are my passion areas. I was a member of the National Curriculum Review Board until 2018, where our focus was to align the Computer Science curriculum across Pakistani universities with industry needs and modern practices. I was also a member of the P@SHA Skills Committee for 2023-2024, where my primary focus was HEC-related engagements including curriculum. I am also a former member of the board of studies at a few universities, including GIKI and NUST. I served as Vice President of the GIK Institute Alumni Association from 2011-2013. I completed my MS from Sweden with a focus on AI and HCI. I love to read (mostly non-fiction) and occasionally, I produce music (https://soundcloud.com/asim-ghaffar-563809180).
