About

Everything begins with relationships. The ones we build. The ones we nurture. The ones that shape who we become. Today, I serve as a Strategic Advisor, author, and keynote speaker, partnering with leaders to build relationship-centered cultures where trust grows, psychological safety deepens, and performance follows. My work sits at the intersection of leadership, culture, and human performance—grounded in one belief: relationships come first. In 2026, I received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the World HRD Congress—an honor made even more meaningful because it came from India, a country that has deeply shaped both my work and my life. My latest books reflect this journey: Transforming Teams: Build Teams That Connect, Collaborate, and Achieve (ATD Press, 2026) offers a practical path to intentionally define culture and the key behaviors that put relationships first. Across more than 150 implementations, engagement, retention, and performance have emerged as outcomes of stronger, more intentional relationships. Worlds Apart: A True Story of Courage, Connection, and Change (OM Books International, 2026), co-authored with Devi Boddu, tells the story of reciprocal mentoring that began with a young girl studying under a streetlamp in Hyderabad and grew into a life-changing partnership rooted in belief. Vulnerable: One Man’s Journey from Abuse to Abundance (Evan & Nathan Publishing, 2026) explores how authenticity and courage reshape leadership from the inside out. Earlier in my career, I served as Chief Learning Officer at Booz Allen Hamilton, where, alongside extraordinary colleagues, we explored what truly sustains performance over time. We discovered that strategy alone does not carry organizations forward. Culture does. Relationships do. From 2005 to 2009, I served as Chief Learning Officer at Satyam (now Tech Mahindra) in India, scaling this work in one of the world’s fastest-growing technology companies. Living between India and the United States through 2012 with my wife and partner, Priscilla Nelson, deepened both the framework and our shared global perspective. In 2009, we co-founded Nelson Cohen Global Consulting, continuing to partner with organizations worldwide to embed intentional, relationship-centered cultures into the systems that drive performance. For almost 50 years, across 75+ countries, I have seen one truth play out again and again: when people feel seen, safe, and believed in, transformation follows. Results fade. Relationships endure. And enduring relationships produce enduring performance.

Senior Vice President Talent Management & Learning

Nov 2005Oct 2009 · 3 yrs 11 mos · Hyderabad Area, India

  • In 2005, I moved to India to serve as the Senior Vice President of Talent Management and Learning at Satyam Computer Services (now Tech Mahindra). In this role, I spearheaded full lifecycle talent strategies, advised top leaders and the board of directors on people-related matters, and managed a $100M annual budget. My work transformed the organization’s leadership culture from directive to distributed, driving impactful and sustainable change.
  • Leading a team of over 600 talent and learning professionals, along with vendor and university partners, I implemented innovative programs, including a blended onboarding process that integrated residential learning, business simulations, virtual sessions, action learning, coaching, and mentoring. This initiative reduced new leader turnover from over 28% to less than 5%, achieving a $5M annual ROI.
  • I architected and led the Satyam School of Leadership, developing more than 5,000 senior leaders annually. Satyam became the first and only company outside the U.S. to be named the number one learning and development company in the world by the Association for Talent Development (ATD).
  • During my time in India, I was introduced to mindfulness and authentic leadership, studying with several Gurus to deepen my personal and professional growth. These experiences profoundly shaped my approach to leadership, emphasizing empathy, resilience, and purpose-driven strategies.

Senior Director, Learning & Organization Development

Apr 1998Nov 2005 · 7 yrs 7 mos · McLean, VA

  • In 1998, I joined the executive team at Booz Allen Hamilton as Director of Learning and Organizational Development and, in 2001, advanced to Senior Director of Learning and Talent Management. Overseeing a $60M annual budget, I led a team of 125 professionals, alongside vendor and university partnerships, to implement transformative learning and leadership initiatives.
  • In close collaboration with the firm’s CEO and senior leadership, I transitioned Booz Allen from a performance-based to a values-based leadership model. This strategic shift resulted in double-digit organizational growth and reduced turnover to single digits, delivering a calculated ROI exceeding $500M during my tenure from 1998 to 2005.
  • One of my hallmark achievements was the creation of Booz Allen's Center for Performance Excellence, a globally recognized corporate university.
