About

I have over 40 years of software engineering and management experience leading small and mid-sized teams as well as full engineering departments in the software, hardware and mechanical engineering realms. I’ve successfully started and run teams to deliver entire subsystems, languages, and operating system technology underlying some of the most innovative and impactful products in the industry: The first mobile smart phones, Macintosh desktops and laptops that redefined where to set the bar, and transformative enterprise server and storage solutions. VP, director, engineering manager/team lead for a variety of corporations and small engineering organizations. Long time advocate of and contributor to open source as a method for engineering collaboration and building new communities. Co-Founder of the FreeBSD project. 12 years in engineering management for Apple, Inc. covering everything from security, OS foundations, and innovative new solutions to formerly intractable problems. CTO for a software defined storage firm for over 3 years, then VP Engineering for a nanotechnology / biomedical company, running Software, Hardware, Mechanical Engineering, Microfluidics, and Manufacturing groups to bring both a desktop and hand-held diagnostic device to market, leveraging custom hardware and embedded Linux / IoT (with deeper data analysis in cloud) to bring inexpensive, ubiquitous agricultural and human diagnostics to the field. Short stint in a senior leadership role at Uber, overseeing software lifecycle (code and config change) management in the Infrastructure organization for thousands of microservices and multiple iOS / Android mobile apps. Currently a Sr. Director at NVidia, where I started in the GPU Computing group and am now part of Omniverse. Specialties: operating systems, UI toolkits, developer APIs, scripting languages
