About

If you want to connect and we aren’t current or former co-workers, please include a short note explaining why you want to connect! :) I am the author of the books Understanding Software (https://www.codesimplicity.com/post/understanding-software/) and "Code Simplicity: The Fundamentals of Software." (http://www.codesimplicity.com/book/) I currently work as a Principal Staff Engineer at LinkedIn, where I am the Tech Lead for Knowledge Systems, a team that builds metrics and feedback systems to understand how we can improve developer productivity and happiness across LinkedIn. I am also one of the overall tech leads of the Productivity & Happiness organization. I was previously the Tech Lead for Code Health at Google, where I did various work that helped other software engineers be more productive, including writing developer tools, creating educational programs, guiding refactoring efforts, and more. Before that, I was the Chief Architect, Community Lead, and Release Manager for the Bugzilla Project. I also wrote http://www.fedorafaq.org/, a primary support resource for people running Fedora Linux. You can find me on Twitter at http://twitter.com/mkanat.

  • I help set and drive the strategy for how we will enable Capital One’s 14,000+ technologists to be efficient, effective, and happy with software development. In particular. I am the senior technical lead for the company’s efforts around:
  • AI-assisted developer experience
  • Programming languages, libraries, and frameworks
  • Providing developers with metrics and feedback systems that help teams improve their own developer experience
  • I also help guide the company’s efforts around how technologists experience and interact with knowledge, including where they write docs, how they find information they need, and how they get support when they have questions.
  • As one of Capital One’s most senior engineers, I both set the strategy for these areas and also dive deep into their details as the team needs me to. Depending on the state of a project, I may be authoring long-term technical principles for a team, writing plans for engineering systems, presenting to all levels of management up to the CEO, mentoring other leads, resolving detailed technical questions, doing code reviews, writing code for PoCs, testing out new tools myself, doing my own data analysis, or any other task you might imagine an engineer doing at any level of a project, as necessary. Of course, my desire is to enable my team and not do everything myself. But I will do anything that is needed and appropriate to help my projects and the company succeed

  • I am the founding technical lead for the Knowledge Systems team inside of the Productivity & Happiness org. We provide data-based insights, documentation systems, and internal search tools to help LinkedIn's engineers and engineering leaders do the best work they possibly can.
  • We built a set of feedback systems and metrics, plus a system called "Insights Hub" that turns this data into action for teams across the entire engineering org. We implemented the standard in-repo documentation system that LinkedIn Engineering uses. We also own and maintain LinkedIn's internal search systems used to find information within the company. And these are just a few pieces of our long-term vision to transform engineering across LinkedIn through data-based insights and knowledge.
  • I am also one of the overall tech leads for LinkedIn's Productivity & Happiness org. I provide guidance and leadership for LinkedIn's developer productivity platform and engineering systems.
  • We published the LinkedIn DPH Framework as part of our work here: a system that describes how to improve developer productivity through data, with actionable advice based on real-world experience implementing metrics and feedback systems for understanding developers.
