About

(Note: description below is outdated by 15 months. back to grind.) I'm on a sabbatical, trying to figure out how to enjoy my free time without feeling guilty. I'm keeping busy with hobbies like data science projects and managing some family investments, but I also want to relax sometimes. To stay active, I swim, walk, and play tennis. Professionally, I've done well. At Nykaa Beauty, I improved how customers start using the product, and at InVideo, I was really good at analyzing data, which even won me an award. I'm using this time off to learn more about myself and find a good balance between work and life

Career break

Personal goal pursuit

Aug 2023Aug 2024 · 1 yr · South Goa

  • I am a mortal human being. My granddad passed away recently at the age of 89. His only regret was he took retirement at 75. He died twice. Once at the age of 75 and second at 89. As I helped my father put fire on Granddad's funeral pyre, I made a firm decision that I will never retire in my life. Even my father lives with the same principle today.
  • This led to a second-level inference - If I am going to work till my death, I can take sabbaticals in between and focus on my body, mind, and soul when I am not in the zone to show up to the office.
  • To the hell with the resume not looking good with career breaks embedded.

Nykaa

Product Manager II

Jul 2022Jul 2023 · 1 yr · Mumbai, Maharashtra, India · On-site

  • I met so many PM folks here who were passionate to ship things, fight for engineering & QA bandwidth, and work longer hours just to push through a bug in time. I realized I could not care less. I realized that these folks would smack my ass when it would come to promotions and getting more resources for one's product vision.
  • The only few things I enjoyed were digging data for the hypothesis, writing the PRD with the help of ChatGPT for better iterations, and brainstorming with the Product Designer for solutions to the problem. But that was a very, very small part of my job.
  • Mostly it was showing up on scrums, handling stakeholders, positive optics on a/b testing, fighting for engineering bandwidth, and calling people up over the phone. A lot of backlogs. I don't think I did a bad job at it. But I don't think I could do this for long periods of time.

  • At InVideo, I had the opportunity to develop and implement product activation and engagement metrics using the Reforge framework. To help ensure that we were tracking the right metrics, I created dashboards on Metabase and Amplitude for growth, activation, and engagement pods. In addition, I designed over 100 amplitude events to help product managers track the performance of feature releases.
  • My efforts were recognized with the ‘Datamonster of the Year’ award from Amplitude, which recognizes the top 25 customers worldwide who contributed to the most Broadcasted Learnings (BL) in their organization. I am proud of the contributions I made to InVideo’s growth and engagement efforts, and I am grateful for the recognition.

  • Had a blast running SQL queries on BigQuery and creating killer visualizations using Metabase and Tableau. I even got to flex my analytical muscles by doing some funnel analytics for a senior PM. It was an awesome gig, but like so many others, was hit by the COVID-19 layoffs, right after my Probation was confirmed.

  • Although I was hired as a Program manager here -the primary job role was of a Business Analyst. I honed my skills in creating value-delivery roadmaps, building business cases, and analyzing energy consumption. I learnt the art of negotiation by collaborating with the tech and account teams. And My Excel and PowerPoint skills went through the roof (kidding - not kidding)

  • After completing my Masters, I felt drawn to return to India and be a part of an incredible journey. As a Gandhi Fellow, I was tasked with working alongside headmasters to improve student learning outcomes. My primary focus was observing the current management style and suggesting minor tweaks using the Pareto principle and eisenhower matrix to unlock time and energy for the most important tasks. We experimented with several different tactics to see what worked best.
  • One of my proudest achievements was prototyping and deploying an assessment tool for teachers to identify math learning gaps within 40 minutes. We implemented this tool across 12 primary schools in Surat and Sanand, although the impact could not be quantified on student learning outcomes due to logistical difficulties.
  • I also taught 2-dimensionsal visual clustering on graph sheet to three teachers to enable them to use weekly test data of language and math for heterogeneous lesson planning. It was an incredible experience to be a part of something so meaningful.
