About

I am deeply passionate about innovation at the intersection of marketing, technology, and ecosystems to drive business value. I've pursued this mission as a martech entrepreneur (ion), a partnerships executive at a major public company (HubSpot), a conference organizer (MarTech), an advisor to breakthrough startups and unicorns (OfferFit, Workato), and a best-selling author (Hacking Marketing). For my pioneering work in the marketing technology space for over two decades, AdAge nicknamed me the "godfather of martech." As VP Platform Ecosystem at HubSpot, I shaped the company's platform ecosystem strategy and led business programs for its global technology partners. Before that, I was the co-founder and CTO of ion, a SaaS company that pioneered no-code interactive content for global enterprises (Cisco, Dell, DHL, General Mills, Microsoft, etc.) and was acquired in 2017. Since 2008, I've also run chiefmartec with over 80,000 readers, analyzing martech — topics at the intersection of marketing, technology, and management. As one of my projects, I created the Marketing Technology Landscape, mapping the growth of the marketing technology industry from a few hundred vendors to 15,000. In 2014, I launched the MarTech conference and served as the event's program chair through 2021, bringing together a community of thousands of senior marketing and technology leaders. I wrote the best-selling book "Hacking Marketing" and co-wrote the best-selling book "The New Automation Mindset." I also co-authored of the seminal article "The Rise of the Chief Marketing Technologist" published in Harvard Business Review. I am a frequent keynote speaker at conferences around the world on topics of marketing technology and platform ecosystems.

Hubspot

VP Platform Ecosystem

Sep 2017Sep 2025 · 8 yrs · Greater Boston

  • I joined HubSpot in 2017 to help them transform from a terrific product company into a true platform company, where the value to customers would grow beyond what our own product teams shipped to encompass a thriving ecosystem of nearly 2,000 other innovative products from ISVs around the world — early-stage startups, high-flying unicorns, and leading public software companies alike.
  • I charted the company's platform ecosystem strategy and built the company's global App Partner program, growing it from under 100 apps and integrations to over 2,000, across 50+ categories, with millions of installs across 268,000+ customers. The average customer installs 9+ apps, with larger customers integrating many more, making HubSpot the center of gravity for their customer tech stack.
  • In September 2025, IDC analysts estimated that HubSpot's ecosystem had grown to over $13B in revenue to partners, expected to exceed $36B by 2028.

Martech conference

Program Chair

Mar 2014Oct 2021 · 7 yrs 7 mos · Greater Boston

  • I was the founding program chair of the MarTech conference series, bringing together a community of digital executives for vendor-agnostic, "graduate-level" learning and networking at the intersection of marketing, technology, and management. We've ran events in Boston, the Bay Area, and London and have served thousands of attendees and hundreds of sponsors and exhibitors.
  • In support of the conference, I also created The Stackies: Marketing Tech Stack Awards, which encourages marketing to share a slide illustrating how they conceptualize their marketing stacks — the collection of tools they use to run marketing. Over 200 companies have participated, from a wide range of firms such as Airstream, BlackRock, Cisco, Microsoft, Morningstar, and Red Wing Shoes.

  • ion originally started as a boutique web development agency in 1998, serving clients such as Citrix, Office Depot, Siemens, and Yahoo!. In 2007, we pivoted our business to this interactive content platform, grew it profitably to $10MM+ ARR, and sold it in 2017 to content marketing platform company ScribbleLive.

Galacticomm, inc.

President

Dec 1990Nov 1996 · 5 yrs 11 mos

  • Before the web, in 80's and early 90's, there were dial-up bulletin board systems (BBS). They let companies and communities run their own America Online (AOL)-like online services for business, fun, or profit. Galacticomm produced The Major BBS, the leading multi-user BBS platform that was adopted by over 20,000 customers worldwide, including major corporations such as AT&T, Boeing, Dell, Citibank, GE, Intel, and Sony.
  • I started working with Galacticomm as a teenage programmer, developing multi-player games, when it was just a fledgling startup. Taking on a number of leadership roles across engineering, marketing, and operations, I was promoted to president of the 75-person company when the founder stepped down. We sold the company in 1996 as the era of BBSes came to a close and the Internet took off.
