About

I'm a Navy veteran and a hands-on leader with over 25 years of experience across defence and aerospace. Whether it’s running business operations, owning the P&L, or building strong partnerships with government stakeholders, I’ve always focused on leading with clarity, integrity, and a people-first mindset. My leadership journey began in the Indian Navy, where I spent over two decades leading large teams and complex operations across strategic planning, HR, and capital procurement. Those 21 years shaped my leadership ethos: mission-first, people-always. I bring that same mindset to the corporate world, leading with clarity, empathy, and accountability. To ensure a strong pivot into business, I completed an Executive General Management Program at INSEAD. This transition led me to Airbus, where I’ve since held several high-impact roles, first transforming Airbus Training Services business across India and South Asia and delivering: - * 250% revenue growth * 400% increase in training volume * Sustained double-digit EBIT through COVID-19 via operational discipline During the COVID pandemic, I also served as Nodal Officer for Airbus India, a role that deepened my commitment to servant leadership as I supported my colleagues through adversity with empathy and action. Today, I lead Defence Accounts & Strategic Relationships at Airbus Defence and Space, working with key government and military stakeholders to drive national defence priorities. I'm passionate about building high-performing teams, scaling purpose-driven businesses, and translating strategy into execution, especially in dynamic, high-stakes environments. For instance, as a Commanding Officer, I led a complex maintenance project that transformed my frontline warship into a fully operational combat-ready unit. Delivering the project on time and to a high standard not only saved $10M in revenue but, more importantly, helped me forge a cohesive, motivated, and operationally focused team, a dream of every leader. Beyond work, I recharge through books on leadership and personal growth (I recently read “Radical Candor” by Kim Scott). I also love traveling with my family as it keeps my perspectives wide and curiosity alive. I'm also proud to mentor fellow veterans through the BharatVeteran Forum, helping them transition into meaningful second careers through guidance and support utilising social media. Reach out to me @vivekkalia76@gmail.com. Always glad to connect with fellow professionals and purpose-driven leaders.

  • Responsible for establishing and maintaining strong relationships across the strategic defence clients in India, identifying specific opportunities for sales on ADS business portfolio: Military Aircraft Systems, Space Systems and Connected Intelligence.
  • Highlights: Built trustful relations with four major government clients | Accord of AoN and release of RFP for Maritime Aircraft project
  • Working in India’s complex defence ecosystem taught me the value of patience, trust, and consistency. I spent time on the ground building relationships with the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, DRDO, and other key partners, not through quick wins, but through genuine collaboration.
  • One of the most rewarding chapters was supporting Airbus’ maritime aircraft campaign. By closely aligning our solutions with the evolving needs of Indian stakeholders, we reached a major milestone: securing the Defence Acquisition Council’s Acceptance of Necessity (AoN). From there, I helped drive the process forward, ensuring clear communication and coordination that led to the timely release of the Request for Proposal (RFP).
  • It has been a journey of bridging cultures, building trust, and moving one step closer to a shared vision.

Airbus

Head of Business Operations Airbus India Training Center

Aug 2019May 2023 · 3 yrs 9 mos · New Delhi, Delhi, India

  • Role involved end-to-end business operations with P& L ownership for Airbus’s aviation training portfolio across India and South Asia, heading a cross-functional team across Sales, Customer Support, Planning, Delivery, and Business Performance
  • Highlights: 250% revenue growth | 400% training volume increase | Double-digit EBIT through COVID | $100M+ contracts
  • Leading Airbus Training Services operations for India & South Asia was a privilege. I was tasked with scaling a nascent yet high impact business, and we did just that. Within three year, we transformed the business by growing Revenue 2.5X, Flight simulator training volume jumped 4X, and we remained consistently profitable with high double digit EBIT, even through the turbulence of COVID-19.
  • One key to this success was crafting a locally grounded pricing strategy that gave us the agility to compete without compromising value. I also led the negotiation and execution of training contracts exceeding $100M, including Airbus’s first-ever wet training deal in the region, a major milestone.
  • But growth wasn’t just about numbers. We broke new ground by entering emerging verticals like drone and ab-initio pilot training, and rolled out e-learning and VR-based programs to future-proof our offerings.
  • Perhaps what I’m most proud of is the team we built, diverse, driven, and high-performing. I worked closely with them, ensuring their growth matched the business’s, with expanded roles and well-earned promotions. Together, we shaped and executed a multi-year strategy rooted in market insight, resilience, and innovation.
  • This high-tempo assignment challenged me to step up and take P&L ownership and lead through uncertainty. It sharpened my ability to learn fast, adapt quickly, and drive growth in a highly disruptive environment.

  • Highlights: Trained and mentored 100+ naval aviators | Logged 2,200+ flying hours| One of the youngest instructors in the Navy | Pioneered Indian Navy’s first aviation e-classroom
  • As one of the youngest flying instructors in the Indian Navy, I had the privilege of shaping the next generation of naval aviators.
