  • Project Name : Ergonomics Intervention in Traditional Brick-Making Industry on Removal of Drudgery and Developing Safe Work Conditions Towards Enhancement of Productivity.
  • Project Funded by : Tata Centre for Technology and Design (TCTD)
  • Project Team:
  • Principal Investigator : Prof Gaur G. Ray
  • Ergonomist : Mr Amar Kundu
  • Nutritionist : Ms Lavanya Bachwal
  • Project Brief : The brick industry in India is a highly labor-intensive sector, employing about 15 million workers. The workers may or may not have prior work experience, and they are not given any training. Therefore, workers are unaware of unsafe acts and hazards related to this work, like adopting awkward postures for working, or they simply ignore the safe working process against their question of survival. The incidences of WMSDs are more in these sectors due to awkward postures and heavy Manual Material Handling. The main aim of this project was to find out the drudgery of brick kiln workers during brickmaking activity and possible sustainable, low-cost design interventions for brick kiln workers.
  • Responsibilities
  • 1. Design, plan, execute and document user trials, field studies, survey & questionnaire creation, & other usability evaluation methods.
  • 2. Collect and analyze usability data with applied statistical techniques.
  • 3. Design new product ideation, product evaluations, competitive analysis, and other usability engineering methodologies for the betterment of products.
  • 4. Produced conceptual design layouts to support the industrial design ideation/ illustration process, using SolidWorks, Catia, etc.
  • 5. Develop mock-ups and proof-of-concept prototypes.
  • 6. Project management activities with vendors, partners, and internal departments.
  • 7. Consult with clients to determine design direction, and streamline the process.

  • Project Name: Interior Design of Drivers Cab for new EMU Rake - Motorman's Seat Design, Workstation Design, Door Design & Interior Design.
  • Client: Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd (MRVCL)
  • Project Team:
  • Principal Investigator : Prof Nishant Sharma
  • Co-Principal Investigator : Prof Gaur G. Ray
  • Ergonomist : Mr Amar Kundu
  • Mechanical Engineer : Mr Swapnil Vibhute
  • Designer : Kamalesh Swant & Kiran Gangadhran
  • Project Brief : This project aims to design a suitable seat for the motorman, which will work with the existing railway cab. Whole-body 3D scanning method was applied to collect anthropometric dimensions of motormen, and according to that, an adjustable seat and adjustable footrest were designed for the existing workstation. Based on the user study, an ideal workstation is also created by using ergonomics good practice.
  • Outcome: (1) Adjustable seat & footrest for existing workstation, (2) Ideal workstation design for New EMU rake, Mumbai, India
  • My Responsibilities:
  • 1. Design, plan, execute, and document user trials, field studies, contextual inquiry studies, survey & questionnaire creation, & other usability evaluation methods.
  • 2. Collect & analyze usability data with applied statistical techniques (t-tests, ANOVA, regression, etc.)
  • 3. Supported and participated in field research, new product ideation, product evaluations, brainstorming, concept generation/review sessions, competitive analysis, and other usability engineering methodologies for the betterment of products.
  • 4. Produced conceptual design layouts to support the industrial design ideation/ illustration process, using Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, SolidWorks, Catia, etc.
  • 5. Develop mock-ups and proof-of-concept prototypes used in new products and processes.

  • Project Title : Respiratory response to tobacco dust exposure among the Bidi binders
  • Project Funded By: Dept of Science and Technology
  • Project Brief: Tobacco dust gets airborne during bidi making, and it is inhaled by the bidi binders, which affects their health. High respiratory morbidity was observed among males than females both in the initial and follow-up study. The main complaints, such as cough, sputum, and breathlessness, showed high prevalence rates in the follow-up study. Pulmonary function test (PFT) values in the follow-up study of male and female bidi binders showed lowered compared with the initial research of the same gender. In male and female bidi binders, the lung volumes FVC, FEV 1, and the flow rates FEF 0.2-1.2 l, FEF 25%-75%, and FEF 75%-85% were significantly lowered in the follow-up study compared with the initial study. The pattern of bronchodilator response on PFT values of the bidi binders suggests that the obstructions in the airways are reversible in nature.
