About

For 35 years I focused on being an innovator in technology, digital marketing and methodologies for driving growth and productivity. It was an honor to oversee marketing for some of Silicon Valley's leading technology companies and in 2007 I founded DemandGen who helped over 1500 companies transform their marketing teams into high-performance revenue drivers. DemandGen was acquired by BDO in March of 2021, and I retired from BDO at the end of 2023 to pursue new passion projects in AI and business coaching. My career journey began at Microsoft, where I was part of the US Sales and Marketing team responsible for launching the Windows operating system and first Microsoft Office applications. In 1991, I moved to Silicon Valley to work with game-changing companies like Farallon, Netopia, and Ellie Mae. My first startup pioneered voice over the Internet, mainly for video gaming, and we sold the company a year later after amassing 4 million users — the video gaming industry and internet communications was forever changed. I'm passionate about aligning sales and marking. All of it. The people, processes, systems. Working with over a 1500 clients has enabled me to develop and refine new ways to help sales and marketing teams align and seamlessly blend art, science, and systems which I've written about in "Manufacturing Demand", a best selling book on lead management which I published in October 2012. In 2007, I founded DemandGen International, an Inc. 500 global consulting and services company that helps sales and marketing teams take maximum advantage from marketing technology and sales technology systems. Our partners included Adobe, Oracle, Salesforce, and dozens of other best-of-breed digital marketing and sales technologies. I sold the company to BDO in March of 2021 and retired November 1, 2023. Thank you to everyone who has helped me on my journey.

  • Responsible for all things marketing including: category creation, branding, product marketing, demand generation, marketing operations, marketing technology, analyst relations, and channel marketing. We crushed our competition, displacing the dominant market-share leader with a brand new product (Encompass) in only 3 years. How did we do it? A great product, brilliant marketing, powerful marketing technology, and of course integration with sales! My work and success here was the genesis for me starting DemandGen - a hands-on professional services consultancy for marketing. The mission, make marketing heroes by doing for them what we did at Ellie Mae (drive revenue and market share using the best MarTech and SalesTech.

  • After years of learning everything I could on sales and marketing, now it was time for me to do my first startup. You might be surprised to learn I was kind of like the "Alexander Graham Bell" of the Internet. A few of us thought it would be amazing if you could talk over Internet while playing video games back in 1999, long before apps like Discord and Skype. We raised 1M and our "clever little idea" changed the world. We sold the company a year later in the peak of the Dot Com era as we had amassed 4 million users in a year (a lot back then) and our technology was amazing. Our VoIP technology enabled voice chat on the Xbox for games like Halo, PlayStation, and virtually every major PC game from Battlefield and Counter Strike. Factoid: I still play Call of Duty to this day in a squad almost every Thursday night.

  • My first chance to catapult a company and take it public while in my 20’s. As one of Silicon Valley’s youngest head of Marketing, my key to success was a tireless work ethic, marketing technology innovation, leadership, culture builder and being an early adopter of this new thing called "the web" for marketing and eCommerce. I was fearless, knew I didn’t know a lot, took risks, failed fast, and sought out great mentors. The 9.5 years I spent there transformed my career and helped me to eventually become the head of marketing. I’m grateful to my managers for believing in me and giving me a shot.

  • My marketing professor said "If you want to become a world-class marketer, first learn why people buy and go in to sales for a bit. That was GREAT advice and I was fortunate to be on the US Sales and Marketing team introducing Windows and all the first versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. What an amazing experience and career launch into high-tech marketing. Best memory was having dinner with Bill Gates which I write about in my book Manufacturing Demand.
