Dr. Axel Hösl — UX Researcher
Revolving my research around users, I employ a mixed-methods triangulation approach which is grounded in a User-Centered Design philosophy. In my approach, I also employ elements of Design Thinking which I apply to the areas of Human-Computer Interaction and User Experience. I shape strategic research initiatives, and involve and manage cross-functional stakeholders through workshops and varying insight sharing formats. Further, I take care of the project management and short-term alignments regarding ongoing research operations. As a UX researcher, I propose ideas, research plans and approaches on how to operationalize them. This covers, on the one hand, defining the goals, deliverables and scope of research activities. On the other, selecting suitable study designs, methodologies and metrics along with opting for reasonable sampling strategies in recruiting participants. In further detail, it also entails securing GDPR compliance, the crafting of interview guides or usability study scripts, generating stimulus material, setting up the study apparatus and defining data structures. Ultimately, it further includes data processing in terms of data wrangling, aggregation, analysis as well as deliverable or research report generation and presentation to stakeholders. My researcher profile can be characterized as a T-shape that broadly spans across the various aspects of early-stage discovery phases (user ethnography, contextual inquiry), mid-stage generative phases (in-depth interview, survey, problem-space and solution-space research) and later stage evaluative phases (controlled usability study, diary study). While my research capabilities cover qualitative and quantitative methods including statistical analysis (inferential statistics focusing on hypothesis testing), my greatest strengths are found in my qualitative work and its application to products or features. My qualitative output often results in the identification of user goals and needs, pain points or design opportunities and transpires into early interaction flows and concepts. Those, in turn, are almost always the precursors to interactive prototypes (paper, mockup, click dummy, apps or physical prototypes via 3D printing and Arduino). In the past, I have conducted work in conjunction with governmental agencies (Bavarian State Ministry of the Interior), corporate entities (Huawei, Panther, MAN), UX and media agencies (envis precisely, Fortis Green Film+Medien) as well as institutions in the arts (HFF, HDK, Lenbachhaus) and sciences (LMU Munich, fortiss, CDTM, MPI).
