Amazon

Software Engineering Intern

May 2017Aug 2017 · 3 mos · Greater Seattle Area

  • Worked in Ask team which owns the Q&A feature in Amazon.com. Ask helps millions of Amazon customers get the answers they need to make informed buying decisions. Some products on Amazon occasionally invite controversy. To protect customers, Amazon will temporarily suppress the posting of reviews, questions, answers and comments for controversial items.
  • Designed and implemented the Ask suppression tool for activism and pre-release products. Used an internal hierarchical database management system as a config store, to eliminate the code-build-deploy cycle thus making the process faster
  • Implemented a read-only mode for the Ask widget to ensure that legitimate customers don’t lose out on helpful answers during the suppression period. Created a self-service UI with fine-grained permission controls to add/edit values
  • Earlier the whole process of suppressing a widget and resolving a bug would take approximately 7-8 hours but this tool is able to achieve it in 5 mins. Was offered a full-time position after completion of internship

Jul 2014Jun 2016 · 1 yr 11 mos · Bengaluru Area, India

  • Worked on linux based Arista's own OS called Extensible Operating System or EOS that was used in companies' switches. Involved in the development of routing protocols that run on Arista switches. I build features for the IS-IS (Intermediate System - Intermediate System)protocol.
  • Work on C, C++, Python & TACC. 20% of the time devoted to maintenance of product code which involves debugging issues.
  • Major Projects:
  • Designed, implemented, and tested Bidirectional Forwarding Detection (BFD) over IS-IS protocol. Reduced failure detection time to <1 sec (400% improvement). This feature allowed Arista to sell switches to Facebook, Microsoft and other firms
  • Optimization of “Show ip route x.x.x.x” command. Handled scalability issues with “show ip route” command when more than 64000 routes are programmed on a switch.
  • Analyzed python profiling data, and determined the CPU intensive task that could be optimized. Reduced the time taken from 89sec to 16sec thus improving the efficiency by 550%.
