Laverne McKinnon, MCC — CEO
Every bold idea, groundbreaking project, or career-defining step comes with the risk of failure. When failure goes unprocessed, it chips away at our resilience, identity, purpose and sense of belonging. I’ve watched it happen to incredibly talented colleagues during my time as a film & television executive and producer. And I watched it happen to me. In 2006, I was fired from a job that defined me. As SVP of Drama Development at CBS, I helped develop hit series like CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and Criminal Minds, building what felt like an unstoppable career. And then—suddenly—it wasn’t. The experience broke my heart, forcing me to confront not just the loss of a title but the deeper reality of losing my sense of self. I didn’t have the words for it then, but now I do: career grief—the invisible loss that so many professionals experience but rarely acknowledge. That loss served as a catalyst for transformation. I became a Master Certified Coach (MCC) and grief recovery specialist to help others navigate transitions—recovering from a layoff, pivoting careers, or stepping into leadership with confidence. I founded my practice to help people explore what’s possible, using the same storytelling instincts I honed in entertainment to help them rewrite their “pitch.” My clients have gone on to earn promotions, launch businesses, and make bold career pivots. They’ve published books, directed Broadway productions, delivered TEDx talks, and produced films that premiered at Sundance and Tribeca. Others have completed passion projects, traveled the world, and reconnected with a sense of purpose they once thought was lost. As a faculty member at Northwestern University, I teach Persuasion & Pitching, a course that helps students frame ideas in ways that inspire action. I also serve on the Advisory Board for NU’s Leadership for Creative Enterprises master’s program and as a mentor for the Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment (CAPE) Leadership Fellowship. Entertainment was a masterclass in navigating uncertainty and reinvention. As EP on Netflix’s GIRLBOSS and co-founder of K&L Productions, I championed marginalized voices and stories of resilience. At CBS and EPIX, I developed series recognized with Emmy, Golden Globe, SAG, and WGA honors. Those experiences remind me that the best stories—and careers—are shaped by the challenges we overcome. Join my Substack community, where I share spiritual, strategic and tactical insights and tools for overcoming career grief, embracing change, and finding community in professional transitions.
