About

I've been a teacher trainer and English language educator since 2004 and worked in India and the United States with early years learners, adolescents and adults. With a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from the English and Foreign Languages University, I've pursued my passion for researching and supporting teachers in finding newer ways to increase student engagement with reading and writing. More recently, my work has focused on self-regulated strategy-based writing instruction. My research has led me to explore creativity in the English language classroom and I've found success in designing innovative curriculum and programs that inspire learners to move closer to unraveling their creative potential. I've conducted in-service teacher training for teachers from India, the Middle East, and Malaysia with an emphasis on teachers who teach under-served students. In these trainings, I've helped teachers incorporate new and innovative methods of teaching writing in their classrooms. In addition to my teaching and training experience, I teach both creative and academic writing to students in schools, colleges, and corporate settings. I've developed and taught writing courses, and authored textbooks on academic writing. I continue to explore creative writing in the form of poetry and short works of fiction.

  • The best teacher change occurs when teachers feel involved in the process of change through reflection and collaboration. Deficit models of teacher development rarely provide teachers the opportunity to take charge of their own learning and development. To understand what changes occur when in-service teachers are provided opportunities to examine their beliefs and practises, change beliefs and practises where necessary, a twelve-week intervention programme was designed to identify their beliefs and practises regarding creativity and teaching writing. Based on their existing beliefs, a set of strategies were used to help teachers teach writing. Findings from the study suggest that factoring existing teacher beliefs is crucial to effect long-term change in practises.
