Bhanu P. — Operations Associate
I am a global public health and nutrition professional with 12+ years of experience of working for organizations in India, Africa and Europe. Most recently, I worked as a Senior Manager with a governance consulting firm called Samagra in the state of Uttar Pradesh advising and assisting the Government of Uttar Pradesh to implement key governance reforms to transform the quality of medical education and training in the state. Prior to that, I worked as a consultant with the Strategic Alliances Division in the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to Govt. of India. During this stint, I was involved with two key COVID response initiatives, one of which included liaising with premier Indian scientists and global and domestic philanthropic organizations to expand genomic sequencing efforts for improved surveillance of emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants. I also spent four years working in South Africa with key national and provincial government decision-makers to reduce the burden of preventable maternal deaths due to unsafe abortions in the country. This involved designing and leading the implementation of a multi-year program in partnership with the South African National Department of Health and the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation to improve the delivery of safe abortion and contraception services via the country’s public health system. During my time in South Africa, I also supported the Africa office of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to increase the political salience of its programmatic priorities and raise the visibility of its work among key stakeholders. Between 2014 and 2016, I also served two separate stints at the World Health Organization in Geneva, primarily focused on identifying mechanisms for WHO to engage with private sector companies and Product Development Partnerships to coordinate and promote the development of affordable medical devices, diagnostics, vaccines and therapeutics. I have sizeable experience of working with different stakeholder groups – including political leaders, policymakers, funders, scientists, public health experts, civil society and media – to build consensus and achieve result-oriented progress.
