Career transition

Jul 2019Jun 2021 · 1 yr 11 mos · Mumbai, Maharashtra

  • Took a short break after my PhD and then unsuccessfully tried to get a foothold in corporate India. Covid & my uncommon profile played spoilsport. From Sep'20 onwards I was busy with CAT preparation and the rest of the MBA application process eventually converting IIM Calcutta.

Tilburg university

Ph.D. Researcher (Economics)

Sep 2015Jun 2019 · 3 yrs 9 mos · Tilburg, North Brabant, Netherlands

  • My initial research was in the area of Optimal contracts and Microfinance. I worked on setting up self-enforcing lending contracts that don't require collateral, a feature prevalent in micro-finance. The model assumes homogeneous agents where the group member chooses to work diligently and monitor his partner(costly peer monitoring) to ensure compliance.
  • 1) Innovated an improved sustainable collateral-free group loan that works under imperfect monitoring
  • 2) Introduced personalized loans & determined a monitoring threshold to ensure positive NPV for the bank
  • 3) Incentivized peer monitoring by giving one borrower a higher payoff which led to greater social welfare
  • Next, I worked on firm optimization under supply-chain risk. The final good producing firm's input demand happens before the uncertainty can be resolved, allowing for sourcing risk. Hedging tools such as financial derivatives are disallowed to ensure volatility reduction is only via input demand.
  • 1) Analyzed supply-side volatility in a two-country model by simulating variations in production technology.
  • 2) Evaluated firm's optimal input quantity choice under multiple input price regimes & supply chain shocks
  • 3) Discovered optimal input quantity & profits are always increasing with higher input substitution
  • 4) Lower profit volatility for firms whose profit-optimizing choice has a higher share of cheaper input
  • 5) Uncertainty/Risk is modelled as fluctuations in output delivery from the source countries due to country-specific shocks.
  • I was under an FTE contract with Tilburg University with both teaching(20%) and research(80%) responsibilities.

  • 4) Editing, testing, and re-evaluation of the survey to make it more coherent to the interviewee
  • The project targeted over 1200 business owners who were interviewed regularly over a period of 6 months. 531 SMEs adopted mobile tech. due to lowering of costs in product info, registration & tech. know-how. 60% rise in financial inclusion & deepening and 55% lower sales volatility for firms adopting mobile tech.

Daad german academic exchange service

DAAD Summer Internship Program

May 2012Jul 2012 · 2 mos · Darmstadt, Hesse, Germany · On-site

  • Awarded DAAD scholarship for the internship worth 5000 euros
  • Research Topic: Effect of Ad-avoidance technologies on Media content
  • Analysed Ad-Avoidance technologies (AAT), its effect on Media Content
  • Analysed a problem: AAT penetration may lead to more advertising, causing further increase in AAT and determined an unique equilibrium outcome and evaluated optimum advertising level
  • Examined content provider responses to increased AAT penetration and its welfare consequences
  • Concluded that higher AAT penetration causes increased user fees and lower advertising levels but reverse is also possible i.e. the effect of fees cannot be effectively determined and depends on the type of equilibrium in question

  • Assigned higher price for parallel tasks to account for the additional cost of blocking of multiple resources at the same time

  • Top 1% out of 1400+ applicants and awarded full scholarship for the internship.
  • Research Topic: Improved model for internet advertisement auctions
  • Evaluated the profitability and problems of existing models for auctioning of online advertisement slots
