About

I've been on the forefront of DDoS for many, many, years in one form or another with the occasional deviation into something a bit different. I was launched into this adrenaline fueled, constantly evolving monster by first playing a role in putting together the first Rackspace DDoS mitigation service in 2003. In 2005 I got a bit deeper by joining Prolexic when it was still a rather shady company operating mostly out of Costa Rica. Today it's very much a legit entity forming the basis of Akamai's mitigation platform. The pinnacle of my hands on involvement came to me via Cloudflare. I was at the forefront of the threat landscape. Working with a talented group of individuals we were awarded a variety of patents covering both the detection and mitigation of DDoS attacks. Very cool stuff! Now, today, I find myself in vendor land on the sales side of Radware working with a seemingly never ending amount of companies with DDoS issues of their own. I really enjoy listening to their needs and delivering a solution to not just meet their needs, but to exceed those and provide scalable implementations that will see them well off into the future. I'm able to provide a unique perspective due to my former experiences on the front line that others can not. When I'm not on the company clock I've taken up a real passion of mine by replicating what I did as a kid - taking apart something important to see what makes it tick. I believe the fancy term for this is "reverse engineering" ;). It's a real blast and I find it very rewarding to figure out the inner workings of things. It helps to keep my technical prowess sharp while occupying a more sales focused role. Never stop asking yourself "Why?" or "How?" things work and seek to understand it.

Network Engineer

Oct 2013Sep 2015 · 1 yr 11 mos

  • I assisted with everything from acquiring network services and data center capacity to developing a solution for shoving 1.5M points of data into a database every N seconds for network monitoring. I uprooted myself from the San Francisco Bay Area to Dallas to have a better opportunity of working more closely with my colleagues.

  • As an early employee at a startup company it's not uncommon (and is probably expected of you) to wear many hats and do whatever it takes to make the company succeed. This is vary apparent in an operations based role where you wear the Project Manager hat. The Network Engineer hat. The Systems hat and a whole heap of other hats you may have not known existed. Cloudflare was no exception and I'm happy and proud to say that I played a key role in laying the network foundation for what Cloudflare has become today. I handled every aspect of network engineering that you can think of; Business justification of capital and operational expenses, negotiation and acquisition of hardware, datacenter, and network services. Oh, and let's not forget the actual engineering of the architectures and 24/7 monitoring and maintaining of that. The buck stops with you. There is no higher escalation point and your colleagues are relying on you to make good solid decisions to protect the company and their livelihoods. I had a great time working at Cloudflare and I'm quite happy to see that they are so successful and I no longer need to explain to most industry veterans exactly what it is they do.

  • Nothing extremely interesting to report here. Handled your typical corporate/IT network infrastructure as the CDN portion of the business was 100% outsourced leaving me with no ability to utilize and apply my background with Peering and CDN operations.

  • One of my most difficult positions I've ever had. Working for a company with a head office in Israel made for a really interesting dynamic between the US team which was comprised of 2 - 3 individuals and the Israel team. Ultimately I wasn't able to really stretch out my wings and do what I excelled at and felt the desire to move onto a larger, more established company. But again, to echo every other startup I've worked at, wore the full gamut of hats required to build and maintain a 24/7 network.

  • As employee #1 your involvement with the company is quite intense. I handled everything from the network side of the house. Network hardware acquisition, architecture, installation, 24/7 maintenance/monitoring of network infrastructure. I learned a lot with my time at BitGravity about people and business and why I received a check for $70 after the acquisition of the company by Tata Communications.

Google

Peering Coordinator / Program Manager

  • Title says it all. Helped run peering for Google and assisted with other team infrastructure projects. At the time, the peering team consisted of two individuals (myself included) and I consider it a true honor to have that responsibility provided to me at such an early point in my career. I enjoyed every moment of working with an incredibly gifted group of people who each had their own unique perspective to bring to the table.
