Paul Wischmeyer — CEO
My passion is research, teaching, clinical care, lecturing, and television reporting on innovative and cutting edge work in critical care, perioperative care, nutrition, and exercise to help patients prepare and recover from illness and surgery. Essentially, putting real science into how we improve care for patients with interventions such as nutrition/exercise and make it understandable for patients so they can apply it simply to their life and recovery. This work includes a long history of NIH, DOD, and industry funded research and teaching on preparation for and recovery from critical care, surgery, cancer and other chronic disease. Specifically my work has focused on the role of nutrition, exercise, the microbiome/probiotics, and other nutrition-related interventions such as protein delivery and sports nutrition to improve outcome and quality of life following acute/chronic illnesses. His research interests have also recently been focused on COVID-19 research into COVID-19 metabolism, role of probiotics in COVID19 prevention and treatment, and exercise and nutrition programs to recover from COVID-19 and Long COVID-19. He recently received a major NIH multi-center clinical trial award to improve QOL outcomes in COVID-19 survivors. My work spans the entire range of translational research from basic laboratory mechanistic work to large multi-center randomized controlled clinical trials. Dr. Wischmeyer has over 200 peer-reviewed publications in critical care, anesthesiology, and nutrition, including in the New England Journal of Medicine. Finally, he has been an invited speaker at numerous national and international medical meetings delivering over 850 invited presentations over his career. He has an H-index of 73 with over 16,500 citations to his work, including 1 publication with > 1000 citations and 55 publications with > 100 citations. My passion for helping patients recover from illness arises from my personal experiences as both doctor and patient. I have undergone over 25 major surgeries and been in the ICU as a patient many times due to a childhood GI illness that took more than half of my intestinal tract. My most recent major surgery was about 1 year ago and so preparation for surgery and recovery from illness are a way of life for me. My hobby’s also include exercise and nutrition as a way of life (I worked my way through medical school as a personal trainer) and working and teaching in hospitals around the world.
