About

People can’t act on what they can’t imagine. That’s not a motivation problem. It’s a visibility problem. In certainty, a pitch works. In ambiguity, it doesn’t. If/then logic depends on a stable world. We don’t live there. So what happens? Brilliant ideas get nodded at and quietly shelved. Talented people get labeled “not quite ready.” Teams circle the obvious because it feels safer than the unseen. Not because the idea is wrong. Because no one can see themselves inside it yet. This is where I work. Not in product. Not in process. In the invisible layer before momentum. I don’t start with what is. I start with what could be. For two decades, I’ve been in rooms where futures were fragile. Investors unsure. Founders early. Teams stuck between what works and what might. Pitching doesn’t help there. Invitation does. When someone convinces themselves, everything changes. They don’t need to be persuaded. They choose. That’s when ideas spread without force. That’s when you stop selling. That’s when potential becomes obvious. If your idea keeps making sense but not moving, there’s a reason. If you feel the gap between what you see and what others respond to, there’s a reason. The question isn’t whether the future you see is possible. The question is whether it’s legible. If it isn’t, we can fix that.

The amplify lab

Potentialist

Aug 2015Present · 10 yrs 9 mos · Oakland, CA

  • The Amplify Lab helps future-minded humans and ideas become irresistible by invitation, not persuasion. This is where misunderstood brilliance becomes momentum.
  • Whether I’m on a keynote stage or in a quiet side conversation, my work is about reshaping perception in real time. Not with polish, but with clarity that cuts. As journalist & entrepreneur Sarah Lacy once put it, “Joanna is a glittering buzzsaw who cuts through the BS in the world of work.”
  • This isn’t branding. It’s perception architecture.
  • I work with individuals and organizations when something should be happening but isn’t. When the right people aren’t seeing it yet. When the language isn’t landing. And when it’s time to stop pitching and start creating the conditions where others want in.
  • People often walk away with more than momentum. They walk away remembering who they are and why it matters. Cristina Mancini, CEO of Black Girls Code said it best: “Joanna reminds us that we're not awesome by accident.”
  • Selected impact and collaborations:
  • Created 10-minute perception makeovers in the middle of conference halls, helping leaders reframe how they show up. Each walked away with language that sparked new conversations and unexpected follow-ups
  • Delivered more than 100 live performances designed to shift how people are talked about in the rooms they’re not in, including invitation makeovers seen by audiences of hundreds to thousands
  • Guided thousands of audience members across keynote stages at TED, Dreamforce, Google, Microsoft, GE, and Kauffman Foundation to rethink how they present their potential so others want in before they have to pitch
  • Partnered with founders, executives, and teams inside tech, innovation, and impact-driven companies to reshape how their work is received, understood, and shared
  • Sparked perception shifts that move projects forward, get stakeholders unstuck, and make the next move feel obvious
