Vocal coach for "Sound of Music"

Feb 2012Apr 2012 · 2 mos · Loveland, Colorado

  • I helped Phil Forman and Karla Quinones, the amazing choir director and theatre teacher at Mountain View High School in Loveland, with the vocal coaching in their production of "Sound of Music" last year. I had just performed the Mother Abbess in the same show in an adult production of SOM in Loveland (not THAT kind of adult production - just a grownup as opposed to high school show) and so I helped the high schoolers with their vocal technique for the high school production of SOM, and played the Mother Abbess for the second time in a year. Fun!

Punk rock singer/waitress

Punk rock singer & waitress

Jan 1979Aug 1979 · 7 mos · NYC and Chicago

  • I was at Manhattan School of Music, and my beloved roommate Bev left school in the middle of our sophomore year. I was bereft. I put up a 3 x 5 card on the bulletin board at Manhattan School of Music, and I got a new roommate that way -- a grad student named Janet, who played the clarinet. Janet joined a woodwind quintet called La Strada Quintet, and I went to their concerts as a kind of booster/roadie. The bassoon player in the quintet, Greg, became a good friend of ours (mine and Janet's).
  • Greg played classical bassoon and taught at a tony Upper East Side elementary school in the daytime, and at night he had a punk rock band. I started to sing with the band, while I was earning money waitressing at Brew & Burger and other places where German businessmen bought overpriced burgers and steins of beer. (Good tips.) Through Greg, the band, and the confidence gained through waitressing at three or four different places, I found the mojo to quit school and move to Chicago when I was 19. I waited tables there, too, until the outdoor cafe where I was working (Melvin's, at the corner of Rush and Cedar) shut down for the winter, and someone told me that you have to be 21 (or had to be, back then) to serve alcohol. That drove me indoors, to office work, and all sorts of office-type adventures.
