About

Companies with strong product vision get stuck - not because the idea is wrong, but because knowing the right strategy and executing on it are two different problems. Building a full in-house engineering team to close that gap is often too slow, too expensive, or not the right move for where they are right now. I have spent 20 years building digital products, primarily with US-based companies. In that time I have worked with every kind of technology team setup there is, and have seen this play out over and over. Allison and I founded Whitespectre 13 years ago to be that partner. We provide dedicated product management and engineering teams that work as an extension of your business. We handle product strategy, UI/UX, technical architecture, platform delivery, AI product development, and IoT systems - and we hold ourselves accountable to business outcomes, not just shipping code. 25+ companies have trusted us with their products - from early-stage startups through growth and acquisition to established brands like Fabletics, SpotOn, and Purple Carrot. Almost all of our clients come through referrals. That tells you everything about how we operate. I still lead Whitespectre's technical strategy and stay hands-on with our client projects because the quality of the work is what drives every conversation we have. That is not a talking point - it is the business model. I write about AI, IoT, and what it actually takes to build production-ready systems at enterprise scale. If you work in technology leadership and want practical thinking rather than hype, follow me. If you are a founder, CTO, or product leader looking for a technology partner who brings real knowledge to the table and moves at the pace your business needs, message me directly. I am always happy to have an honest conversation about whether we are the right fit.

  • Dedicated product, design, and AI-augmented engineering teams for growth-stage and enterprise companies who need to move faster than their internal capacity allows - without sacrificing product quality or strategic thinking.
  • We run 3-7 concurrent client projects at any given time, each as a Managed Delivery Team - an integrated squad of product managers, designers, and engineers. We are deliberately not large. Keeping the team at around 50 people across 15+ countries means every project gets senior attention, and our 5+ year average tenure means clients are not constantly onboarding new faces.
  • Our deepest technical work is in AI product development - from multi-agent systems and evaluation pipelines to production conversational AI - and IoT, where we build full firmware-to-cloud products including edge computing, device management, and real-time data systems. Our foundations are in e-commerce and subscription platform engineering, which is where we built our track record of scaling successful businesses - conversion, retention, and performance optimization at scale.
  • Architecture decisions matter more than language choices, and that is where we spend most of our thinking. Most commonly, the stack is JavaScript, TypeScript, React, Ruby on Rails, Python, and Go on AWS.
  • I lead technical strategy across all engagements and stay close to the work. Allison leads product and design. Rowan runs operations. The leadership team is hands-on because the model only works if the people making promises to clients are the same people accountable for delivery.

  • I invest in and advise early-stage technology companies - primarily at seed and pre-seed - where I can add real value beyond capital. That usually means founders building at the intersection of hardware and software, or applying AI to problems that require deep domain understanding to solve properly.
  • I have backed 20+ companies across climate tech, AI process automation, geotechnical monitoring, computer vision, digital health, B2B transportation, and consumer brands. My preference is for businesses solving tangible, real-world problems where the technical execution is genuinely hard.
  • What I bring beyond capital is two decades of experience building and scaling technology products, particularly in areas where software meets physical systems. That is where most of my portfolio sits, and where I am most useful as an advisor.

Stella & dot

Managing Director, Technology

Jan 2013Aug 2016 · 3 yrs 7 mos · San Francisco Bay Area

  • Stella & Dot is a multi-channel fashion and accessories brand that scaled to hundreds of millions in revenue through a network of independent stylists across the US, Canada, and Europe.
  • I joined as Managing Director to lead the technology organisation through a period of rapid platform growth. The two most significant pieces of work were building the microservices architecture that would replace the monolithic platform, and launching the iPad point-of-sale app that equipped the stylist network with a modern selling tool in the field.
  • To deliver the microservices rebuild, I opened a new engineering office in Barcelona and built the team from scratch. Across both the San Bruno headquarters and Barcelona, I helped introduce agile delivery practices, cross-functional team structures, and the processes needed to ship reliably at the pace the business was growing. That platform launched as the foundation for KEEP Collective and went on to become the shared architecture powering all of the Stella & Dot family of brands.

  • ideeli was ranked #1 on the 2011 Inc. 500 as the fastest-growing private company in America - a flash-sale e-commerce platform that grew from early stage to nine-figure revenue. I joined the two founders in 2006 and built the technology organisation across three roles over seven years.
  • In this final role, I moved back into delivery-focused leadership with responsibility for the full e-commerce and back-office technology platform. Tightened engineering practices across a distributed team, improved deployment speed for business-critical features, and renegotiated key vendor contracts to reduce costs across the engineering organisation.

  • As ideeli hit nine-figure revenue, the technical challenges of the flash-sale model - extreme traffic spikes, time-limited inventory, and real-time demand - required a different kind of thinking. I moved into a strategic architecture role, focusing on the design patterns, platform decisions, and technology choices needed to keep the infrastructure ahead of the growth.
