  • Hired and managed a team of Product Managers responsible for customer facing compute products (this includes serverless, fully-managed, & scale-to-zero “virtual warehouses” that are responsible for most of Snowflake’s revenue), "adaptive" right sizing, offloads & acceleration for specialized workloads, multi-tenant isolation sandbox for Snowpark, single-tenant “Virtual Private Snowflake” SKU, financially-backed availability SLA, cost governance (Budgets, alerts, throttling of serverless services, per-job cost, time-shiftable jobs, automated insights & recommendations for low-yield spend, anomaly detection, forecasting, etc.), and workload optimization features for better price-performance.

  • Lead product management for multiple new compute initiatives across Virtual Machine, Container, and WebAssembly form factors.
  • Managed a team of Product Managers and owned the roadmap for AWS's Nitro system (highly differentiated virtualization stack that offloads many critical functions to custom hardware), Confidential Compute offerings, uptime SLA, availability & scalability features (rebootless patching, live-migration, auto scaling groups launch templates, placement groups), compute management features (image hosting & lifecycle, VM/container lifecycle, sidecars, VM/container connectivity, customization metadata, service mesh integrations, storage lifecycle, VM/container patching tooling for immutable & mutable infrastructure approaches), and Firecracker (an open-source technology for serverless computing that powers AWS Fargate, AWS Lambda, and multiple data & analytics services). Firecracker is also used outside AWS by Fly.io, Weave FireKube/Ignite, Stripe, OpenNebula, webapp.io, and many others.

  • I led multiple efforts in the area of containers, Linux, and application modernization.
  • 2019-2020: I conceived and launched Bottlerocket, an open-source Linux distribution purpose-built to run containers at scale. Bottlerocket and its accompanying cluster update operator power "managed node groups" in Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS). In addition, I owned the container runtime strategy for AWS and made the case to invest in containerd, which is now used across AWS container services (Fargate, EKS, ECS) and IoT edge platforms (Greengrass). I also helped launch tools and services to help customers modernize traditional applications into containerized microservices such as AWS App2Container and AWS Microservice Extractor & Code Transformer (later rebranded under the Amazon Q Developer umbrella).
  • 2017-2018: I launched Amazon Linux 2, a Linux distribution. As a result of intentional efforts to grow usage by adding new capabilities (e.g., rebootless kernel patching, automated performance tuning on EC2, on-premises support, windows compatibility bridges), ISV certifications, and community outreach, it quickly become one of the most used Linux distributions on AWS. It also enables AWS offerings such as Amazon Linux Workspaces (GUI desktops as a service). As a part of a related effort, I conceived and launched "Image Builder", an AWS service to build secure and up-to-date VM and container images.

Senior Product Manager

  • My time at Microsoft spanned product management roles in the areas of Azure Compute (Hyper-V), Azure Big Data, and Azure IoT. Noteworthy achievements include:
  • 1/ Jointly birthed the area of "confidential compute" in the cloud by proposing and launching "Shielded VMs", an innovative offering to secure, isolate, and protect sensitive workloads using secure enclaves and attestation.
  • 2/ Helped launch "micro virtual machines" & "container instances" via Hyper-V Containers to enable multi-tenant isolation for fast-starting Docker containers.
  • 3/ Helped kick off Azure Sphere as its first product manager. Azure Sphere is a comprehensive IoT solution which includes custom hardware (ARM-based microcontroller), custom OS (a pared down Linux kernel - a first for Microsoft!), programming environment, developer tooling, and cloud components (for device management, authentication. and updates).
  • 4/ Grew usage and profitability of Azure Stream Analytics, a serverless stream data processing solution with new GTM motions (new SKUs, new pricing models, growing partner ecosystem, influence analyst perception) and new features (real-time ML, geospatial analytics, improved observability & debugging experience, cost estimation & controls, and user-defined functions).
  • 5/ Launched Linux and FreeBSD support on Hyper-V after getting buy-in from senior leadership and Linux distribution vendors at a time when Microsoft was a Windows-first company.

  • I implemented targeted modifications to system software (kernel, memory management systems, thread library, compiler, hardware offloads) to improve the latency of algorithmic trading systems. As a part of this effort, I also re-wrote equities trading applications with "lock-free" data structures and SIMD "vector" CPU instructions to measurably improve performance.

  • POW Solutions was a startup hosted at Carnegie Mellon University. I led a team that formulated statistical models and implemented changes in firmware and low-level system software to improve the power efficiency of servers by changing CPU power states based on workload behavior.

  • I built improvements to resource isolation properties of containers in AIX (IBM's proprietary UNIX OS). AIX Workload partitions (WPARs) are OS containers that are analogous to Docker containers in Linux and Zones in Solaris.
  • Prior to this, I developed libraries for performance profiling of openMP and MPI applications and implemented compiler features for automatic parallelization on POWER, x86, and BlueGene architectures.
