Munaal Abdali — Head of Talent
After 7 years in talent acquisition and early careers consulting across New Zealand and the MENAP region, I’m now exploring the world of tertiary education. My industry background gives me a unique dual lens – I understand both employer expectations and student needs. In my current role as an Employability and Careers Specialist at AUT, I help students build the confidence, clarity, and practical tools to navigate New Zealand’s employment landscape. It feels full circle – having once been an AUT student myself, I know first-hand the transformative impact of the support offered here, and I’m driven to help students uncover their potential the same way I did. Previously, I worked as an Early Careers Consultant at Talent Solutions, delivering recruitment and engagement projects for top employers like PwC, BDO, Contact Energy, and Les Mills. Prior to that, I led non-tech hiring for Careem (a subsidiary of Uber) as a Country Talent Acquisition Lead, supporting rapid expansion across the MENAP region. That fast-paced, high-growth environment sharpened my adaptability, stakeholder management, and talent strategy skills. Earlier, I managed national-level recruitment at TCS, Pakistan’s largest logistics company, where I helped scale talent during the pandemic to meet rising demands for digital and logistics support. Across each of these roles, I’ve brought a commercial mindset – always connecting how talent strategies align with broader business goals. I hold a Master of Business in HR & Employment Relations (First Class Honours) from AUT. Today, I’m excited to bridge the gap between education and employment – designing initiatives, building partnerships, and helping students thrive in a world of work that’s constantly evolving. Lately, I’ve been particularly energised by the use of AI in student employability. I’m currently designing workshops to guide students in using AI responsibly and effectively – ensuring that tools enhance, rather than overshadow, their unique strengths and stories. Outside of work, I’m passionate about creativity and nature – whether it’s experimenting with arts & crafts or unwinding in the garden. These small joys help me stay curious, grounded, and open to new perspectives. If you're an employer looking to engage emerging talent, or a professional passionate about building bridges between industry and education – let’s connect.
