An Indian born in Pakistan, lived, studied and worked across different countries such as Japan, Moscow, Cyprus, South Africa, USA and Canada has given me an understanding of various cultures and people, taught me adaptability and has made me a multi-faceted individual, both professionally and personally. As the head of Film Acquisition & Distribution, I have learnt a lot and had stellar success in building a new busines for Zee and leading it to being an industry leader. In a market where rate of commission alone is the key parameter, I have chosen to look at the quality of content rightly priced as the main barometer for a film selection and am proud that my team has been able to turn the game around. And have been able to build ZEE into one of the most aggressive Studios in the domain of distributing Indian films in global markets. The Studio has become a frontrunner with films across different Indian languages like Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telegu, Malayalam and Punjabi. Have also been successful in taking Indian films like Hindi Medium, Secret Superstar, MOM, Padman, Kesari, Manikarnika etc to markets like China,Japan and successfully opened new territories like that of Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Netherlands, Russia and Poland amongst others. Given the additional responsibility of licensing the vast ZEE library across the globe, I have started off with achieving more than 110% of the targets in Q1 and I am sure that soon this will become another big profit center for my team and my organization. Fitness is my other passion and being a qualified fitness instructor, I dabble a lot into fitness. Watching content and pushing limits during a workout are the two doses that keep me sane in an insane world!

  • For the 19 years of my professional career, my drive to redefine and up-skill myself has led me to work with some of the most amazing companies in the entertainment ecosystem, transcending the traditional and digital distribution ecosystems in content consumption. Setting up teams and businesses in the domain of content has been my forte....combine it with tech and I am excited to wake up for work every single day! My current position at Netflix is all about interacting with the most talented content makers and having the challenge to find the best films from India that would delight our customers across the globe. Prior to this opportunity, I have been a part of the team that launched the TVOD service for Amazon Prime Video, India. Having successfully launched TVOD with films like KGF-2, Spiderman, Sarkaru Vaari Patta, I was then given the opportunity to be a part of the SVOD team. This opportunity of working deeply in the TVOD as well as the SVOD ecosystems is something I truly treasure for the deeper insights that I have been able to gather. Prior to getting in the digital domain, I set up the International theatrical film business for Zee Entertainment and with a gifted team was able to take it to the top position with films like Hindi Medium, Secret Superstar, Mom etc. that went on to make business benchmarks and win several awards.

  • Having seen the consistent achievement that I was able to lead for ZEE in the business of film acquisition and distribution, I was promoted in this appraisal and also awarded additional responsibility for leading the business of Global content licensing in addition to current role of leading the international film distribution business. The licensing business of ZEEL syndicates Zee’s premium television content portfolio of over 260,000 hours of programming along with its movie library worldwide. Dealing with acquisition and sales in feature films across different Indian languages is helping me in a great way when I now also am in charge of licensing content worldwide
  • 1. While our target is steep and almost 50% more than what was achieved last year, I have re-organized and re-energized the team which has in Q1 itself helped us achieve more than 110% which is almost double of what was achieved in the Q1 of last fiscal
  • 2. Opened up various avenues including licensing films like Article 15 to Netflix in an unprecedented deal at ZEE and opening up new buyers from China at the MipChina in May

  • ZEE was a much insignificant player in the overseas film business before the management realized the vacuum that exists and handed me the responsibility of building this business from scratch. In the last 3 years, this business is now a cash cow and ZEE a dominant player in films for international business.
  • 1. Successfully built ZEE Studios International on basis of choice & selection of content. In a market where only 7% of the Bollywood movies break even or make profit, At ZEE Studios we have had a near 100% success rate across all the movies that we have acquired and distributed.
  • 2. Opening of new international markets is an important key to success in a global content market environment - Aamir Khans ‘Secret Superstar’ in China, Taiwan, Russia, Korea etc, Irrfan’s ’Hindi Medium’ in China & Taiwan and Sridevi’s ‘MOM’ in China, Russia & Korea, and now Kesari to be released in Japan.
  • 3. Great relationships and repeat business dealings are a must have criteria in our business and we currently share this with some of the most prominent production houses and studios such as Dharma, Balaji, Red Chillies, Excel,Junglee Pictures and Maddock films.
  • 4. Building our own sub-distribution network is one of the key differentiating factors that we have been able to create which has helped overall profit margin. Have successfully set up this in all key markets such as North America, Europe, Australia, Singapore, Mauritius
  • 5. The job has demanded not just an acute sense of identifying the right content but also doing so at the right price and selingl it at the right value to the right partners. My team has been able to deliver more than 115% of our targets in the last 3 years and build a business from scratch into one of the cash cows for the company
