Alexandra Robinson — Associate Partner
I consider a lot of the challenges that we face in society today, to be rooted in trying to apply mechanistic world views on complex adaptive systems - be they human or other living systems. I find great value in working with sense-making and complex facilitation, as essential tools to enabling systems to learn and evolve through their decisions and actions. Facilitating the integration of narratives and perceptions and energy gradients in choosing next steps in strategy. I do this with teams and networks in a variety of contexts. Whether its extractive economic policies and practices, or the polarisation arising from profit driven social media algorithms, or the uncertainty in the face of mounting geopolitical tensions and climate change - I believe that the biggest leverage for responsive and life supporting human systems lies in addressing how we choose to move in the face of uncertainty. I'm inspired by Gregory Bateson's Ecology of Mind, and the methods derived by Dave Snowden from the science of complex adaptive systems - that cognition is a distributed function, an emergent property of bodies and their environments. Therefore, in my work as a facilitator and strategic design, I seek to include ways describing dispositional states in specific contexts, to then work on of changing the interactions in ways that favour emergence of novel patterns - and thus the unfolding of learning, of life.
